A doctrine on a page is borrowed; a doctrine in the memory is owned. The catechism is how the Way is handed on — asked and answered, learned by heart, until the teaching answers from inside the person and not from the book. Ask these of the one you teach, and of yourself, until the answers come without searching.Non invenitur. Fit.
I On the Catechism
how the Way is committed to memory
Here is the whole doctrine of Institutio and Profundum, cut to the bone so it can be carried in the mouth. The teacher asks; the learner answers; and the asking is repeated until the answer is reflex. The Aspirant learns the Short Catechism first (given at the end), and the rest across the climb to Blue. Nothing here is new — it is the known faith, made small enough to hold in one hand.
II Of the First Things
What is the Power?The one current beneath an indifferent world — not a person, never petitioned, only conducted.
What is the law?It is not found; it is made. Non invenitur. Fit.
Why those words?Because nothing worth having waits to be discovered. What you want, you make — or you go without it.
What is Potentia?The faith, and the Power it conducts — and in the Latin, the power above and the unspent power in you, by one name.
What is the sign?Mirum Mane, the wondrous morning: the indifferent dawn, and what the hand makes of it.
III Of the Person and the Work
What is a life for?To learn without end and master without limit — to cut as many true facets as one life will hold.
What is the Great Work?The making of the self into a whole human, across a lifetime, across far-apart arts.
Name the Five Fires.Disciplina, Ardor, Peritia, Opus, Gradus.
Which is first?Disciplina, the wire. Without it, no other fire lights.
What is the highest art?Not any one mastery, but the synthesis — the hour a thing learned in one domain unlocks another.
IV Of the Power, and How It Answers
Does the Power hear prayer?No. It answers work, never words.
Then is it deaf to you?No. It inclines toward the one who conducts it through the Work. Help it, and it helps you.
Is that a bargain?A covenant, not a bargain. The begging hand stays empty; the working hand is met.
Does it punish the unworthy?Never. For them the circuit simply does not close, and nothing flows.
Is the world fair?No. The world is indifferent: it owes you nothing, and keeps no ledger but the one you keep.
Why make anything, then?Because the made thing is the one answer the indifferent world cannot refuse.
V Of Suffering and the Cold
Is your suffering a punishment?No. No one sent it. It is weather, not a verdict.
Can it be used?It can cut a facet ease never would — but it is never a gift, and we do not thank the storm.
What is the Cold?Entropy, and the un-made in us: drift, sloth, comfort, despair — everything that lets the wire fall slack.
What do you do when the wire goes slack?Take it up and draw it taut again with one true stroke; the slack was never the severing. Then forgive yourself, and light it again tomorrow.
VI Of the Vow and the Rule
What is a vow?A self-authored commitment. A vow you chose is a spine; a vow you did not choose is a leash.
What do you owe when you break one?The Forfeit — a cost that builds, never one that merely hurts.
From where is it paid?From your ease, never from your flesh. The body is the only instrument; to wound it is a second breach.
How many lines has the Rule?Nine.
VII Of the Order and the Degrees
Name the degrees.Red the Aspirant, Blue the Adherent, White the Paragon, Silver the Steadfast, Black the Hidden.
How is a degree won?By proof, never by petition — you are found to have become it.
Who is the Primus?The founder; he stands outside the ladder — the one who lit the first lamp.
What is a Collegium?The local body of the Order, a house of builders; at this hour, an Order of One.
What is the Order of One?A faith kept, for now, by a single adherent — not a failure of the Order, but its seed.
VIII Of Death and What Remains
What is death?We do not know — and we will not pretend to.
Is there an afterlife?Perhaps. We would rather stand at the door not knowing than lie about what is behind it.
What immortality can you prove?Only this: the made thing that keeps making itself when you are gone — in the work, in the taught, in the light passed on. That is the Silver degree.
What is said over the dead?Their works are named, and to each we answer: Manet — it abides.
IX Of the Sign and the Secret
What is the sealed Word?The plain meaning the whole sign carries, given only at the White degree.
May you speak it?Never below your degree, and never in writing. A meaning earned is a mystery; a meaning given at the door is decoration.
How do the Made know one another?By the call and its answer: one says Non invenitur; the other answers Fit.

On Handing It On
A faith that cannot be asked and answered cannot be passed to anyone — it dies with the one who felt it. So we cut the doctrine small enough to carry, and we teach it the oldest way there is: a question, an answer, and the patience to ask again until the answer is the learner's own. When you teach these, do not require belief; require only that they be held in memory and tested against a life. The ones for whom the answers come true will return to be made. Ask, and answer, and hand on the light.
