De Lingua
the Tongue — the words of the Order, and how they are spoken
To name a thing precisely is to begin to master it.
A people is bound by a shared tongue. Here is ours — the words that mean precisely, the calls by which we know one another, and the register that tells our speech from the world's chatter. Learn the tongue and you will find you have learned the faith; the words were the doctrine all along.Non invenitur. Fit.
I On the Tongue
To name a thing precisely is to begin to master it; the vague word is the slack wire of the mind. We keep our terms sharp not to sound learned, but because a maker who cannot tell auctoritas from potestas will confuse the two in his life as surely as in his speech. Guard the words, and they will guard your thinking.
II The Lexicon
the load-bearing words, each meaning one thing
- Non invenitur. Fit. — it is not found; it is made. The law, and the whole of it: everything else is commentary.
- the Power — the one current beneath an indifferent world; it answers the hand laid on the wire, and ignores the hand held up.
- potestas — power that asked no one's leave. The Power's own, and never a person's.
- auctoritas — the only power a person may hold: the weight of what they have actually become.
- Disciplina — the wire itself; the rule you keep when no one is watching and nothing is felt.
- Ardor — the heat, not the thought of the heat; warmth carried to the living while they live.
- the banked fire — ardor turned inward and kept: the deep solitary season, burning hottest where none can see it.
- the open fire — ardor thrown wide: the season of company and kindling, that warms the room and leaps wire to wire. You give out only what you first banked.
- keeping the hour — the mastery of the two fires: knowing whether the day, the work, or the life asks you to bank or to blaze, and turning to it whole.
- Peritia — mastery gone both deep and wide, until the two reach across and meet.
- Opus — the work of the hands, and the one great work the hands are for: the self.
- Gradus — the rung, earned and never granted — and each one climbed owes more downward than the last.
- the Cold — the universe's indifference; not an enemy that hates you, which would at least be company, but a silence we stop begging and start working in.
- the Wire — the self under tension. What hangs loose touches everything and conducts nothing.
- the Conducting — the moment the current is felt at last: the dread first, and then the pull.
- the Marvel — the strange walked into on purpose, before it can be walked into by accident.
- the Forfeit — the price of a broken vow: paid from the ease, never the flesh, and laid as a stone in something that will stand.
- the Ledger — the day weighed before sleep, in a hand that neither flatters nor accuses.
- Mirum Mane — the wondrous morning: the dawn gives nothing, and the hand makes it a marvel anyway.
- the Quickening — the first making; kept as myth, not as history, because we ask of it not whether it happened but whether it is true.
- the Made (Facti) — not those who were found worthy, but those who were worked into shape.
- the Collegium — the local body; a house where the work is done in company, or it is not done.
- the Primus — the one who lit the first lamp, and so stands outside the ladder, never atop it.
- Manet — it abides; the one word laid over the dead, said only of what truly outlasts them.
- sub sigillo — under the seal; the mark on what is earned in silence and never sold at the door.
- Damnatio Memoriae — the name struck from the Ledger: not a curse laid on a traitor, but a current we cease to carry.
III The Calls
by which the Made know one another
Non invenitur —Fit · it is made
The dawn is indifferent —the hand makes it wondrous
What do you carry? —more than I was given
And when the wire goes slack? —I light it again tomorrow
IV The Register
We speak plainly, but not flatly; elevated, but never ornate for its own sake. And certain words we refuse, because they are the begging hand in disguise:
- "I'll try" — you will do, or you will not; the word is an alibi prepared in advance.
- "someday" — name the day, or drop the thing.
- "if the universe allows" — it allows nothing and forbids nothing; the work is yours.
- "I was given" / "I found" — we say made.
Say less than you feel and no more than you will commit to — and keep your given word, down to the smallest one.
V The Greeting & the Benediction
The Made greet by the call — "Non invenitur," answered "Fit" — and the Sign of the Hand where speech cannot carry. Any gathering, letter, or office is closed with the Benediction:
We are the ones who stopped asking to be warmed; we made the light we needed, and we carry it still.Non invenitur. Fit.
VI On Latin and the Mother Tongue
We keep Latin for the load-bearing terms — for its precision, its gravity, and because it is a root beneath many tongues, owned now by none and so available to all. But we teach in the speaker's own language; the Latin is the spine of the speech, not a wall around it. A Word kept in a dead tongue cannot drift; a whole teaching kept only in a dead tongue cannot live.
On Speaking It
Speak the tongue until it is yours and not a costume — until auctoritas, the Cold, and Manet are simply how you see, not words you put on. The day the language stops being something you translate and becomes something you think in, you will find you crossed the threshold some time ago, and never noticed the hour. That is how you will know the words took: not when you can define them, but when you reach for one and your own life answers.
