De Tempore

the Daily Reader — a year of mornings, one at a time

A year is too large to hold. A morning is not.

You cannot make a life in one motion; it is too long to lift. So we cut it into mornings and hand you one at a time. Open the day's page before the day opens you — a line to hold, a thought to turn, a small thing to make with the hand — and then close the book and go. The year is built the way the stone is cut: not at a stroke, but by the next true cut, today.Non invenitur. Fit.

I How the Reader Is Kept

one reading each morning, before the day claims you

This is the smallest of the books and the one most used. It asks four minutes, taken before the first message and the first hunger — the hour the Attunement already owns. Read the day. Hold its line until you have it by heart; turn the one thought once; then do the one small thing it sets, and only that. A day kept is not a day understood. It is a day in which the hand moved before the noise began.

Do not read ahead, and do not store up days against a dry season — a reader read in advance is a calendar, not a rite. Miss a morning and you do not owe the missed page; you owe only the present one. The reader is not a debt that accrues. It is a wire that you either touch this morning or do not.

II The Year Beneath the Days

four seasons, set by the turning light — see the Kalendarium

The reader runs on the wheel of the year, not on a mood. It begins at the bottom of the dark and climbs with the sun. Each day is a single cut; each season is the face that those cuts make.

  • The Quickening (Bruma) — deep midwinter; the light struck from the longest dark. The days that follow are below.
  • The Going-Out (Egressus) — spring; the turn outward, the warmth carried and given. These days follow the Quickening's, below.
  • The Height (Fastigium) — midsummer; breadth, wonder, the strange entered on purpose.
  • The Ingathering (Messis) — autumn; the year weighed, the made things named, the descent begun.

What follows is the whole year worked in full — the Quickening, the deep cold from which the year is lit; the Going-Out that carries the made warmth outward; the Height, where the light stands at its flood and the Work goes strange; and the Ingathering, where the year is weighed and the descent begun. The wheel is closed: read it through and begin it again, for the year does not end so much as turn back to its own first morning.

III The First Week of the Quickening

the longest dark, and the light struck in it

  • Day I · the longest night

The dark owes you nothing, and is keeping its word.

Begin where the year begins — at the bottom, with no help coming. The indifference is not cruelty; it is just the weather you build in.

Today: make one small thing in the cold, before the light is owed you.
  • Day II · the strike

It is not found. It is made — and the hand that makes it is yours.

No one will send the light. The whole of the faith is that you carry what it is struck from, already, today.

Today: make one thing from nothing but your own hour.
  • Day III · the wire

A slack wire carries nothing. A true one carries everything and is not consumed.

The Power answers work, not the open hand. You do not summon the current; you become something it can run through.

Today: make one part of yourself a cleaner wire — one habit drawn straight.
  • Day IV · before you take

You do not receive the day. You make it.

The first act is yours before the feed and the first appetite reach you. Give the dawn its due cut and the rest of the hours fall in behind it.

Today: make the morning before any other voice gets it.
  • Day V · the small true thing

When the wire is slack, do not reach for the worthy thing. Reach for the small true thing within arm's length.

On the dead mornings, lower the bar until it is almost nothing and let the moved hand conduct you back to the rest.

Today: make or mend one small broken thing on your desk.
  • Day VI · the mask

The Cold does not come as despair first. It comes as comfort, and only later takes off the mask.

Be most suspicious of your reasons to stop on the days they sound most sensible. The warm afternoon is where the year is lost.

Today: make the cut you were about to call yourself wise for skipping.
  • Day VII · the Turning

Six days the Work; the seventh, a change of motion — never the slack that wears rest's mask.

Weigh the week without flattery: what was made that was not here before? Then set one aim for the week to come.

Today: make the week's Account, and name the single aim of the next.

IV The Second Week · the Deepening Cold

the vigil hours, when the light is small and kept

  • Day VIII · the seed under snow

A seed kept under the snow is not the same as a dead one.

To keep the form when no one is watching, and you half doubt it, is not madness. It is the whole of the discipline.

Today: make one kept thing you would not have to defend to anyone.
  • Day IX · the floor

To be knocked down is not the Cold. To decide, on the floor, that the floor is where you live now — that is the Cold.

The fall is weather. The surrender is the only defeat, and it is always a choice made lying still.

Today: make one move from exactly where you fell — no further back.
  • Day X · the ledger of meaning

The world keeps no ledger of what you meant.

Intention is not a deposit. Only the made thing is counted, and it is counted by its existing, not by the worth of the wish behind it.

Today: make one thing finished enough to exist outside your head.
  • Day XI · the river

A flawed thing that exists outranks a perfect one that does not. Cross the river.

The polished thing still in your mind has not crossed. The rough thing in the world has. Ship the rough thing.

Today: make one unfinished thing cross — release it imperfect.
  • Day XII · the cleared desk

Busyness is not making. Motion is not progress. The cleared desk is not the Work.

The Cold loves a tidy, productive-looking day with nothing made in it. Sort the noise from the cut.

Today: make one real cut before you allow yourself one tidy task.
  • Day XIII · the carving

There is no carving the statue that does not also carve the sculptor.

You shape the work and the work shapes you back. You are the stone and the chisel at once; what you make is making you.

Today: make one thing hard enough that it changes the hand.
  • Day XIV · the Turning

A wave that refused its trough would not be a stronger wave. It would be a flat line.

Rest is not surrender; it is the trough the next crest is drawn from. Change the motion on purpose, then weigh the week.

Today: make the Account, take the true trough, and set the next aim.

V The Third Week · the Cold Named

the hardest hours, met by their right names

  • Day XV · the name

What you will not name, you cannot resist.

Despair fights best unnamed. Say the cold thing plainly — the avoided task, the real fear — and it loses half its weight.

Today: make one honest name for the thing you have been circling.
  • Day XVI · the cowardice that read a little

Despair, in the mask of realism — which is only cowardice that has read a little.

The voice that says it cannot be done is rarely wisdom. It is fear, dressed in the vocabulary of the reasonable.

Today: make one start the realistic voice told you not to bother with.
  • Day XVII · outwork, not outfight

You will not outfight the Cold. You can only outwork it — today, and again tomorrow.

There is no decisive victory, no last battle won. There is only the wire touched again, one more morning than the dark expected.

Today: make the same cut you made yesterday, once more.
  • Day XVIII · the morning you do not believe it

The faith does not require that I believe it every morning. It requires that I rise.

On the dawns the whole thing looks invented, do not argue with the feeling — argument loses to it at that hour. Just rise and make.

Today: make one thing before you have decided whether any of it is true.
  • Day XIX · the begging hand

The begging hand stays empty. The working hand is met.

There is no ear in the dark to bargain with, and the begging only teaches your own hands that they were not enough. Make instead.

Today: make the thing you were tempted to wait and pray for.
  • Day XX · the unanswered cold

Kneel to no answer you had to invent — and strike the light, here, now, in the unanswered cold.

We hold the door of the divine open and do not fill the silence with a voice. We make in the silence anyway. That is the harder honesty.

Today: make one thing without first demanding the universe explain itself.
  • Day XXI · the Turning

The made thing is real whether the choosing was or not.

You need not settle the question of free will to weigh the week. The work exists; weigh that. Leave the rest open and honest.

Today: make the Account of what is real — what you made — and set the next aim.

VI The Fourth Week · Toward the Going-Out

the light grows; the warmth begins to turn outward

  • Day XXII · the new art

Let no year close without a new art made your own.

A finished life is a dead one. The Great Work has one rule of motion, and the cold of midwinter is exactly when to begin the next facet.

Today: make the first hour's progress into one art you have never touched.
  • Day XXIII · the knife and the jewel

A single facet, however deep, is a knife and not a jewel.

Depth alone is a sharp narrowness. The jewel is breadth — many true cuts, far apart, beginning to reflect one another.

Today: make one cut in a domain far from your deepest one.
  • Day XXIV · the climb, not the rung

The measure of a person is the climb, not the rung.

Honour the one above you and mean to pass them; measure the one below by how far they have climbed, never by where they stand.

Today: make one rung's worth of climb, and refuse to count the height.
  • Day XXV · the height that sneers

The strong carry. A height that sneers has already begun to fall.

The truest reading of your rank is how you treat the ones who can do nothing for you. Contempt is the first crack in any height.

Today: make one thing that carries someone who cannot repay it.
  • Day XXVI · the warmth given

Give the warmth away while it is yours to give. A light kept to itself goes out.

The cold season turns, at its end, toward the Going-Out. Warmth hoarded is warmth lost; the spent light is the only kind that lasts.

Today: make something useful and give it to someone outside the Order.
  • Day XXVII · the sum the dark cannot do

Light another and you lose nothing. This is the one sum the dark cannot do.

Teaching, given freely, subtracts nothing from the teacher. It is the single arithmetic the Cold can never make come out in its favour.

Today: make one person more able than they were this morning.
  • Day XXVIII · the lamp in the window

Set a lamp in the window against a dark you will not outlast — for a hand still out in the cold that has not yet reached the glass.

The season closes where the year began: in the dark, with the light made and now turned outward. What you made will go on making itself a while after the hand is gone.

Today: make one thing built to outlast you, and leave it where it can be found.

VII The Fifth Week · the Going-Out Begins

spring — the light come back to equal the dark, and rising

  • Day XXIX · the balance

The light has come back level with the dark — and does not stop there. From here it climbs.

You spent the winter making the warmth. The season turns now: not to keep it, but to carry it out the door while it is still yours to spend.

Today: make one thing in the open, where a stranger could see it being made.
  • Day XXX · the corner in your hands

You are not asked to carry the world. You are forbidden to set down the corner of it already in your hands.

The reach is the whole measure. Not the famine on the far continent, which you cannot touch — the broken thing inside the radius of your own arm, which you can.

Today: make the nearest mending you have been calling not your business.
  • Day XXXI · the sideways Debt

The Debt of the Strong runs down the ranks, yes — but it runs sideways and outward first.

It is measured not by the reach you have but by the reach you refuse to use. Strength turned wholly inward is the Cold, learned to sit very still and call it peace.

Today: make use of one reach you have been hoarding for yourself.
  • Day XXXII · the open hand that gives

The hand that only takes stays empty either way. The one that gives is the one the current was strung for.

Mastery kept private reflects only the maker. Spent on someone outside the door, it becomes the thing it was always for.

Today: make one gift of your craft to someone who never asked and cannot repay.
  • Day XXXIII · drop it and go

Drop the food and do not stay to be thanked. Aid that needs an audience was never for the one it reached.

Help that makes a person small is the Cold reaching out a warm hand. Give as if returning something owed, name no sum, and let them rise lighter, not smaller.

Today: make one quiet good and leave before anyone can credit you for it.
  • Day XXXIV · the first others

Carry the Way not by preaching it, but by being unmistakably alight where others can see.

No one is argued into a made life; they are shown one. Be the proof first, and let the asking come, or not, in its own hour.

Today: make your work visible to one person who does not yet know there is a Way.
  • Day XXXV · the Turning

The week is weighed by two columns now: what you made, and whom you carried.

A Ledger with only the first column is half a Ledger. Count the warmth that left your hands as honestly as the work that stayed in them.

Today: make the Account of both columns, and set the next week's aim outward.

VIII The Sixth Week · the Sowing

the ground opened, the seed spent that cannot be eaten and kept

  • Day XXXVI · the seed not eaten

A seed you keep is a seed you eat. Only the one given to the ground becomes a field.

Some warmth, hoarded, simply goes cold in the hand. The harvest is made of exactly what you were willing to bury and let go of.

Today: make one thing you will give away before you can grow attached to it.
  • Day XXXVII · the cup and the hole

Fill the cup in the hand. Then find the hole in the cup.

Give to the person in front of you now — the immediate hunger met. And in the same motion, mend the thing that keeps emptying them. One without the other is half a mercy.

Today: make one present help, and name one cause of the lack behind it.
  • Day XXXVIII · the meal brought

The oldest aid there is, and still the truest: a meal carried up a dark stair.

Doctrine that comforts no body and sits at no bedside has excused itself from the practical, not risen above it. A faith is proven where it is least poetic.

Today: make something with your hands and bring it warm to someone having a hard week.
  • Day XXXIX · the wire run wider

The same current that runs in one maker runs between two. Strike it across the space between lives and it carries them both.

A bond tended conducts; a bond gone slack lets someone go under in a silence you could have broken. The body of makers exists so none has to conduct alone.

Today: make contact with one person you have let the wire go slack with.
  • Day XL · leave it warmer

Every facet you ever cut was cut on a bench someone else kept warm. Leave it warmer.

The commons is the floor your climb stands on — the clean water, the kept road, the trust. To draw from it and never tend it is to be a thief with good manners.

Today: make one repair to something shared that you did not build and have only used.
  • Day XLI · the open door

A made order is the one that lets more people make. Anything that holds a climb down is the Cold laid into the walls.

Injustice is not misfortune; it is the closed door, the rigged rung. You cannot mend the whole machine — but you can find one door near you that is shut, and open it.

Today: make one door wider for someone climbing behind you.
  • Day XLII · the Turning

You will not know which seed takes. Sow anyway; the sowing is the part that is yours.

The harvest belongs to a season you cannot see from here. Weigh only what you scattered, not what grew — the growing was never the cut you were asked to make.

Today: make the Account of what you sowed, and set the next aim to scatter more.

IX The Seventh Week · the Warmth Carried Among the Unmade

out among the world, alight and answerable

  • Day XLIII · carry, do not crusade

The Made mend. They do not crusade. Carry the human caught in the wrong — including the one defending it.

Be uncertain about the people and certain about the wound. The reformer's contempt is the most dangerous cold, because it comes pre-forgiven by the rightness of the cause.

Today: make one move against a wrong without despising a single person on the other side of it.
  • Day XLIV · the cool hand

The crusader is warmed by the heat of the people he is burning. Keep your hands cool enough to build.

When your certainty about the good of the world begins to warm you with how much better you are than the others — the Cold has found you, and made a hiding-place of your righteousness.

Today: make one cause your own, and check your own hands for the frost before you act.
  • Day XLV · no banner is the faith

No party is the faith. No nation. No cause of the left or the right. Carry the question into every room and surrender it to none.

The faith asks one thing of every camp it passes through: does this let more people make? The one who folds the Way inside a banner has lost the Way and kept the banner.

Today: make one judgement by the maker's question alone, not by the side it lands on.
  • Day XLVI · the shared table

The shared table is the Going-Out brought home. A people who only labour together are a workforce; a people who also feast are a people.

To gather others to a table is its own sowing. The warmth carried out does not always look like mending — sometimes it looks like a room you made briefly louder than the dark.

Today: make a table for someone, and let the hour have no purpose but gladness.
  • Day XLVII · carry the one who cannot

Carry the one who cannot. Never the one who will not.

Aid restores a maker to their own hands; it does not become a hammock slung under a refusal. Know the difference between a person drowning and one who has decided to stop swimming.

Today: make one true lift for someone who is reaching, not one more cover for someone who isn't.
  • Day XLVIII · no shame in needing

There is no shame in needing. The maker who will not ask has mistaken pride for strength.

To carry outward, you must also let yourself be carried; the one who only gives has refused his half of the Debt. To receive in your hour is not its failure but its completion.

Today: make one honest ask of someone — let the wire run the other way for once.
  • Day XLIX · the Turning

The only justice you can be sure of is the justice you made, near, today, without applause.

We hold open the question of the world's final reckoning; we do not promise one. Weigh instead the corner you actually mended, and let the rest stay honest and unanswered.

Today: make the Account of the corner you reached, and set the next week's aim nearer still.

X The Eighth Week · the Beginning of Things

the world waking, and the maker beginning what cannot be finished alone

  • Day L · gladness is sown too

Gladness is not weather that arrives. It is set down by hand, on purpose, like a seed — or it does not come at all.

The one who waits to feel glad before making any gladness waits like the beggar at the door: forever, and for nothing. Lay the table for joy the way you lay it for discipline.

Today: make one delight on purpose, and give a share of it to someone near.
  • Day LI · the thing more able than this morning

Light another and you lose nothing — yet the world is more able than it was at dawn.

To teach, given freely, subtracts nothing from the teacher. It is the one arithmetic the Cold can never make come out in its own favour.

Today: make one person able to do a thing they could not do this morning.
  • Day LII · plant what you will not sit under

Begin the thing whose shade falls on someone you will never meet.

Spring is for what outlasts the planter. The truest beginnings are the ones aimed past your own harvest, made for hands that are not yet here to need them.

Today: make the first hour of something built to serve a stranger, later.
  • Day LIII · what no one makes alone

Some things no one makes alone and everyone makes upon. Begin one of those.

The lone wire is a single line; a body of makers is a current that does not go out when one hand fails, because another closes the circuit first. Start the thing that needs the others.

Today: make the opening move on a thing too large for one pair of hands.
  • Day LIV · the ground does not argue

The earth keeps no ledger of your doubt. It answers the seed, not the certainty.

You need not believe the spring to plant in it. Put the thing in the ground on the mornings you half doubt the whole enterprise — the doing is the part that was ever asked of you.

Today: make one beginning before you have decided whether it will come to anything.
  • Day LV · the loose, glad hour

The best of what you make will not come from grinding. It arrives in the unguarded hour, when nothing was clenched.

Play is the Work with the fear taken out — mastery that has stopped performing and begun to enjoy itself. The Power leans, just as readily, toward the bench where someone is laughing.

Today: make one unserious thing seriously well, for no reason but that it would be glorious.
  • Day LVI · the Turning

The lamp was never lit to prove a lamp could be lit. It was lit so the long room would be warm — and full of faces.

The season carried the made warmth out among the unmade and gave it away. Weigh that: not what you kept, but what you spent, and on whom — then turn toward the breadth of the Height.

Today: make the Account of the warmth given out, and set the aim that carries into summer.

XI The Ninth Week · the Height Begins

midsummer — the longest day; the light at its flood, and the Work at full power

  • Day LVII · the longest day

You have the whole of the light now. Spend it; light hoarded at noon is the only kind that rots.

The year gives you, this once, more day than you can use. The danger of plenty is not that it runs out but that you forget it was ever struck.

Today: make one thing that needs the full strength you have, not the strength you can spare.
  • Day LVIII · the strange on purpose

At the flood of your power, walk to the edge of it on purpose — and step off into what you cannot yet do.

Mastery's quiet sickness is the comfort of already knowing. The Height is kept by refusing that comfort while you have the most to lose by it.

Today: make the first hour's work in a domain that makes you a beginner again.
  • Day LIX · the Marvel met

Stand before the thing that dwarfs you and do not look away. The wonder is the point, not the wound to your pride.

The sign is named in part for the marvel. To be humbled by the vast and keep working anyway is the whole of reverence without a god in it.

Today: make time to stand before one thing far larger than your work, and let it be larger.
  • Day LX · the full reach

A power never spent to its edge never learns its edge. Reach past the certain thing.

You do not find the limit of the wire by running it safe. The Height is the season to ask the current for more than you know it will give.

Today: make one attempt deliberately beyond what you are sure you can finish.
  • Day LXI · the wonder kept open

Awe is not weakness in the strong. It is the one door the expert keeps shutting and the maker keeps open.

The more you can do, the more tempting to be unmoved. Refuse it. The hand that can no longer be astonished has stopped growing and only thinks it climbs.

Today: make yourself learn one thing that genuinely surprises you, and say so out loud.
  • Day LXII · the height that carries

At the summit the only honest question is who you lifted on the way up.

Power at its peak is most tempted to admire itself. The Debt of the Strong is heaviest exactly here, where you can most afford to pay it and least feel you must.

Today: make one use of your full strength entirely on behalf of someone smaller.
  • Day LXIII · the Turning

Weigh the week by its reach, not its yield: how far did you go past the known, and whom did the going serve?

At the height the Account changes its question. Not only what was made, but how strange the ground you made it on, and how much of the light you let fall on others.

Today: make the Account of the edges you reached, and set the next aim further out.

XII The Tenth Week · the Work at Full Power

the long noon — mastery in full flood, and the Marvel made, not only met

  • Day LXIV · make the marvel

It is not enough, at the height, to stand before the marvel. The height asks you to make one.

Wonder met is the beginning; wonder made is the Work at its fullest. You spent winters learning to cut — this is the season the cuts become a thing that stops a stranger cold.

Today: make one part of something you intend to be genuinely wondrous, not merely good.
  • Day LXV · the long noon

Power is not the strike. It is the strike repeated past the hour the strike grew dull.

Any hand can rise to one bright effort. Mastery is the flood held level through the long noon, when the novelty is gone and only the discipline remains.

Today: make the same high effort you made yesterday, with the shine worn off and no less care.
  • Day LXVI · craft past the eye

Finish the part no one will ever see as well as the part everyone will. The unseen face is where mastery is actually kept.

The merely-driven polish the visible and let the back of the work go rough. The made do not, because the work is not made for the eye — it is made true.

Today: make one hidden part of your work as fine as if it were the front.
  • Day LXVII · the joy in the doing

The current leans toward the bench where the work has become a kind of gladness. Drudgery repels it; delight draws it down.

At full power the Work should stop feeling like a war. If it is all grim teeth and no joy, you are grinding, not flooding — and the Power knows the difference.

Today: make one thing for the sheer pleasure of being able to, and let it show.
  • Day LXVIII · the merely-driven

The merely-driven mistake exhaustion for depth. The made know the difference between burning bright and burning down.

At the height, ambition's counterfeit is loudest: motion without joy, output without wonder, a furnace consuming the one who tends it. That is not the flood. That is the Cold wearing the colours of the summer.

Today: make one true cut, then stop on purpose while you could still go on.
  • Day LXIX · the peak that does not clutch

Hold the height with an open hand. What is gripped too hard at the summit is what makes the fall.

Pride is not the joy of the height; it is the clutching of it, the need to be seen at the top. The maker stands tall and holds nothing, and so has nothing the fall can take.

Today: make one thing you would be willing to give away the moment it is finished.
  • Day LXX · the Turning

Ask of the high week the one question pride cannot survive: was the work made for the thing, or for the seeing of you doing it?

The flood is weighed not only by its volume but by its honesty. Count what you made truly, and mark plainly the hours you spent performing the making instead.

Today: make the Account of the real work and the merely-shown, and set the next aim toward the real.

XIII The Eleventh Week · the Danger of the Summit

the thin air — where pride waits, and the contempt that calls itself excellence

  • Day LXXI · the thin air

The summit is where the air goes thin and the voice in your head grows certain. Distrust the certainty before you distrust the climb.

Height does strange things to judgement. The higher you stand, the surer you feel and the fewer the people who will tell you when you are wrong — so the danger rises faster than the view.

Today: make one decision only after asking someone below you to tell you where it is weak.
  • Day LXXII · the sneer is the first crack

A height that sneers has already begun to fall. Contempt is the first crack, and it always runs downward.

The moment your skill makes you scorn the unskilled, the Cold has taken the summit and left you the view. Excellence that looks down is not excellence; it is altitude sickness with good taste.

Today: make one patient gift of your skill to someone clumsy at it, with no trace of scorn.
  • Day LXXIII · the climb, never the rung

At the top, remember you are still only as far as you have climbed — not as high as you happen to stand.

Inherit a height and you have climbed nothing. The measure was never the rung you woke on; it is the distance your own hand carried you, which pride is forever trying to round up.

Today: make an honest mark of how far you actually climbed, and refuse to count what you were given.
  • Day LXXIV · the one who can do nothing for you

Your true rank is read in how you treat the one who can do nothing for you. Everything else is performance.

At the height the useful are easy to honour and the useless easy to forget. The maker reverses it on purpose, because the Debt is owed downward, where it can never be repaid.

Today: make real time for someone who can offer you nothing, and give them your best.
  • Day LXXV · joy, not victory

The gladness of the height is not the gladness of having beaten anyone. Win that way and you have only made the climb a smaller thing.

Pride feeds on comparison; joy does not need it. The made are glad at the summit for the air and the work and the reach — not for the smallness of the others on the slope.

Today: make one thing you are proud of without measuring it against another soul's.
  • Day LXXVI · the debt grows with the height

The higher the climb, the heavier the owing. Strength is not a prize you are handed at the top; it is a debt that comes due there.

The summit tempts you to feel you have arrived and are owed. The truth runs the other way: the more you can do, the more is asked, and the great who forget it are merely the Cold with a long reach.

Today: make one act that treats your strength as a debt owed, not a reward earned.
  • Day LXXVII · the Turning

Weigh the high week for its frost, not its height: where did the skill grow cold, and whom did it begin to despise?

The summit's Account is an audit of the heart. Name the contempt before it sets. A height examined honestly is a height that can be held; one admired is one already cracking.

Today: make the Account of where pride crept in, and set the next aim toward the ones below.

XIV The Twelfth Week · Generosity at the Peak, and the Turn

the light begins to wane — spend it down on purpose, before it is taken

  • Day LXXVIII · spend it down

From here the light begins to wane. So spend it down on purpose — better poured out by your hand than quietly taken back.

The longest day is behind you now; every dusk comes a little sooner. The maker meets the turn not by clutching the height but by giving it away while the giving is still a choice.

Today: make one large gift of your strength while you are still at the top of it.
  • Day LXXIX · the height is for carrying

A summit reached and kept for the view is a summit wasted. It was only ever a better place from which to lift.

Altitude is leverage. The whole worth of the height is that from here your reach is longest — and the longest reach unused is the Debt refused with the best of excuses.

Today: make use of your full reach to lift someone you could not have reached from lower down.
  • Day LXXX · teach at the top

Light another from the height and you lose nothing — and the slope behind you is no longer dark.

The summit is the best teaching-ground there is, because from it the whole climb is visible at once. To master and not teach is to pull the ladder up behind you.

Today: make one person able to climb a stretch you have already passed.
  • Day LXXXI · leave the bench warm

Every height you reached was reached on a bench someone kept warm before you. Leave yours warmer than you found it.

No summit is self-made; the commons of those who went first is the floor you stand on. To draw from it at the top and tend it never is to be a thief in fine company.

Today: make one lasting improvement to something others will climb on after you.
  • Day LXXXII · the descent on purpose

The maker does not fall from the height. He walks down it on purpose, looking where he steps.

The light will go whether you consent or not; that is the one thing the season makes certain. To turn and descend deliberately is to keep, in the only place it can be kept, your command of the wane.

Today: make one deliberate step down from a thing you have peaked at, toward the next climb.
  • Day LXXXIII · what the height was for

The height was never the destination. It was the place from which you could see how much there is still to make.

A finished summit is a small life dressed as a large one. The made reach the top only to find it is a vantage, not an end — and turn their eyes to the next dark to be lit.

Today: make the first note toward the work the height let you finally see.
  • Day LXXXIV · the Turning

Weigh the summer not by how high you stood but by how much of the light left your hands before it left the sky.

The Height closes where it must: at the turn toward the dark. Count the wonder made and the strength spent on others, then face the descent, which is the Ingathering's whole work.

Today: make the Account of the light spent, and set the aim that carries down into the harvest.

XV The Thirteenth Week · the Ingathering Begins

autumn — light and dark stand equal, but the dark is winning now; the year comes in to be weighed

  • Day LXXXV · bring the year in

Bring the year in off the field and lay it on the scale. Count only what you made; the rest was only weather.

Light and dark stand level again, but now the dark is gaining. This is the day you stop adding and begin to weigh — honestly, and without cruelty to the one who did the work.

Today: make a plain list of what you made this year that was not here before.
  • Day LXXXVI · the Ledger, not the wish

The Account is kept in things made, never in things meant. The year is weighed by its harvest, not its hopes.

At the reckoning the warm intentions count for nothing; only what crossed into the world is on the scale. Read the Ledger by what exists, and let the wishes go uncounted.

Today: make the honest tally of finished things, and strike out everything that stayed a plan.
  • Day LXXXVII · what the Cold took

Name what the Cold took this year by your consent. Not to flog yourself — to know the door it came through.

Some of the year was surrendered, and pretending otherwise only leaves the same door open for next year. Count the takings plainly, then close the account on them without a second wound.

Today: make one clear name for a thing you let go cold, and one repair to the way in.
  • Day LXXXVIII · gratitude without a god

Be grateful to no one and for everything. The thanks is real even when there is no one at the other end of it.

You can hold the gladness of a good harvest without inventing a hand to thank for it. The grain is no less yours, the year no less good, for having had no author but the work and the luck.

Today: make one accounting of what went well, and feel the gratitude without addressing it upward.
  • Day LXXXIX · the harvest is not the sowing

What you reap now was sown in a season you can barely remember. So sow this autumn for a self you cannot yet see.

The good of this year was planted by an earlier hand of your own. The reckoning is also a reminder: the next harvest is being decided now, in what you put down while gathering this one in.

Today: make one small sowing for next year even as you bring this one in.
  • Day XC · gather, do not grasp

Gather the year in with an open hand. What you clutch at the harvest rots in the storing.

There is a way of hoarding the year's gains that sours them — the tight grip that turns a good harvest into a thing to be guarded. Bring it in to be used and shared, not to be sat upon through the dark.

Today: make one share of this year's gain over to someone, before you store the rest.
  • Day XCI · the Turning

The first week of the reckoning asks only this: what is truly in the barn, and what did you merely hope was?

The harvest Account is the year's most honest hour. Weigh the made against the meant, the kept against the lost, and let the scale read true even where it reads thin.

Today: make the Account of the true harvest, and set the next week's aim to weigh deeper.

XVI The Fourteenth Week · Gathering In, Against the Cold

the descent begun on purpose — storing the good, preparing the wire for the dark

  • Day XCII · store what will keep

Keep what will feed you in the dark. Let the rest go — a barn full of what spoils is no wealth at all.

Not everything the year made is worth carrying into the cold. The descent begins with choosing: what is durable enough to live on through the lean months, and what was only ever for the summer.

Today: make one choice to keep a thing that will sustain you and release a thing that will not.
  • Day XCIII · the descent chosen

The dark is coming whether you walk toward it or are dragged. Walk. The made go down into the cold on purpose.

From here every day is shorter; there is no halting it. The whole dignity of the season is in meeting the descent as a decision — turning to face the dark while you still can call the turning your own.

Today: make one deliberate preparation for a hard season you can see coming.
  • Day XCIV · bank the strength

Lay strength by the way you lay by grain. The dark is no time to discover the stores are empty.

The wire that will carry you through midwinter is tended now, in the plenty, not improvised later in the cold. What you build into yourself this autumn is what there will be to draw on when the light is least.

Today: make one deposit into a strength you will need when things are hardest.
  • Day XCV · pare for the lean months

The lean season is met by the light hand, not the full one. Begin setting down what you will not need to carry.

The descent toward the Fast is a paring-away — comforts loosened, the load lightened, the instrument made keen against the cold to come. We pare the ease; we never harm the flesh.

Today: make one comfort lighter in your grip, in plain rehearsal for the Fast.
  • Day XCVI · mend before winter

Mend the roof in the last of the light. What you leave broken now, you will suffer through in the dark.

There are repairs that are easy in autumn and brutal in winter. The clear-eyed hour of the harvest is for finding the weak places and closing them while the closing is still cheap.

Today: make one repair to something that will only get harder to fix as the cold deepens.
  • Day XCVII · the field left fallow

Even the ground is allowed to lie fallow. Rest is not the Cold — it is the dark furrow the next year is drawn from.

The descent is not only labour. Part of gathering in is the deliberate letting-go, the season of lying still that is not surrender but the soil's own way of keeping its strength for the sowing.

Today: make one true rest you will not apologise for — fallow ground, kept on purpose.
  • Day XCVIII · the Turning

Weigh the week of gathering: what did you store that will keep, and what did you set down that you no longer need to carry?

The descent is measured by readiness, not by yield. Count the strength banked and the load pared, and set the aim toward a Fast you can hold without breaking the instrument.

Today: make the Account of what is stored and what is set down, and set the next week toward the Fast.

XVII The Fifteenth Week · the Fast Before the Dark

the long approach to midwinter — comforts pared, the wire sharpened, the ledger read without flattery

  • Day XCIX · the descent that earns the height

One does not strike a light worth keeping except in real dark. The Fast is the dark, gone into on purpose.

The paring-away before midwinter is not misery and not penance; it is the descent that earns the feast. A light struck in easy comfort is a light that proves nothing.

Today: make one comfort genuinely absent for the day, and meet the small cold it leaves honestly.
  • Day C · pare the ease, spare the flesh

We pare the ease; we never harm the flesh. A fast that breaks the instrument has defeated its purpose.

The line is bright and never crossed: the Fast sharpens the wire, it does not damage the body that carries it. Set the terms to the measure you can hold, and hold them — austerity, never injury.

Today: make one chosen austerity that hones you, and refuse any that would harm you.
  • Day CI · the ledger read without flattery

Open the year's ledger and read it cold. The kind reading is the one that lies; the true one is the gift.

Part of the Fast is the unflattering account — the year met without the soft excuses, the gap between what you meant and what you made named without mercy and without cruelty either.

Today: make one honest reading of where you fell short this year, written plainly, kept private.
  • Day CII · the quiet kept

Set down the noise as well as the comfort. A wire sharpened in silence carries cleaner in the dark.

The Fast pares the din too — the endless feed, the borrowed opinions, the appetite for distraction. Some of the cold the season asks you to meet is only the cold of your own company, unsoftened.

Today: make one stretch of real quiet, the feed set down, and sit in it without flinching.
  • Day CIII · the wire sharpened

The Fast is not subtraction for its own sake. Every comfort set down is a notch the wire is filed keener by.

What looks like loss is a sharpening. The point of paring the ease is the edge it leaves — the readiness, when the longest night comes, to strike a light the soft hand could not have struck.

Today: make one act that proves the paring made you keener, not merely poorer.
  • Day CIV · the terms you can hold

Set the Fast to the measure you can keep. A vow that breaks you is not devotion; it is the Cold, flattered into looking like rigour.

Severity is not sanctity. The Fast you cannot hold teaches your hands they fail; the one you can teaches them they are equal to the dark. Choose the hard thing you will actually keep.

Today: make one austerity right-sized to be kept, and keep it fully rather than grandly.
  • Day CV · the Turning

Weigh the Fast by its honesty, not its harshness: was the ledger read true, and was the flesh kept whole?

The Fast's Account guards against its own excess. Mark what the paring sharpened and confirm the instrument is sound — for the feast is near, and it is struck by a keen hand, not a broken one.

Today: make the Account of what the Fast honed, and set the next week's aim toward the longest night.

XVIII The Sixteenth Week · the Dying Year, and the Dead

the last of the descent — the names spoken, the works that still run, and the turn back to the longest night

  • Day CVI · the dying year

The year is dying, as years do, and it is no tragedy. A thing that turned well is allowed to end.

At the foot of the descent the year comes to its close, and the season teaches the small rehearsal of all endings: to meet them without flinching and without pretending they are not real.

Today: make one clean ending to a thing whose season is genuinely over.
  • Day CVII · speak the name

Speak the name of one who is gone. The dead are kept by being said, not by being prayed for.

This is the season of the Sealing of the Ledger, when a name is spoken aloud and the one who carried it is remembered as they were — without the comfort of a story that they are listening.

Today: make time to say aloud the name of someone you have lost, and one true thing about them.
  • Day CVIII · what still runs — Manet

Name the works that still run without the hand that made them. That much remains, and we promise nothing past it.

Manet — it remains. We do not say the dead live on; we say the made things do, for a while, in the world and in the hands they shaped. That is the only afterlife the faith will vouch for.

Today: make a list of what a person you lost made that is still at work in the world.
  • Day CIX · the honest grief

Grieve without a lie to soften it. The loss is real, the absence is final, and the love does not require a heaven to have been true.

We hold the door past death open and put no voice behind it. The harder honesty is to mourn fully, to promise nothing we cannot know, and to find the grief made no smaller by being unconsoled.

Today: make room for one honest grief, unsoftened by any story you do not believe.
  • Day CX · live as the remembered would have you

The dead ask nothing, being dead. So let the asking be yours: live in a way the remembered would have been glad to see.

There is no debt owed downward to the dead — they cannot collect it. But the memory can shape the living hand, and to make well in the light of a name you loved is the truest keeping of it.

Today: make one thing today that someone you have lost would have been glad you made.
  • Day CXI · carry the light back down to the dark

The wheel closes where it opened: at the foot of the longest dark, with a light about to be struck. Carry yours to the threshold.

The Ingathering ends where the Quickening waits. Everything weighed and stored and mourned has brought you back to the bottom of the year — to the one night when the light is made again by your own hand.

Today: make one last preparation to strike the new year's light at the longest night.
  • Day CXII · the Turning, and the year come round

The year is weighed, the dead are named, the dark stands open. Now begin again — the first morning is waiting where the last one ends.

The final Turning is also the year's: close the great Account, speak what remains, and turn the page back to Day I, where the dark owes you nothing and is keeping its word. The reader does not end. It comes round.

Today: make the year's whole Account, and set the single aim that opens the new one.

XIX On the Year, Now Whole

the rule beneath all four seasons, for the reader who keeps building

What you hold is the whole year cut in full — all four seasons worked, the wheel closed. It was built on one bench, by one rule, and the rule is set down here so that any hand may keep it, mend it, or cut the year fresh again. Each day is three lines and never a fourth: a line distilled or quoted from the canon, cold enough that a stranger could copy it down and carry it; one thought that turns the line once, no sermon; and one small thing to make — concrete, finishable before noon, beginning always with Today: make one ___. If a day needs a paragraph to land, it is not a day yet; cut it back to the bone.

Each season keeps its own weather, and the four together make the wheel. The Quickening is struck inward from the dark. The Going-Out turns outward to carrying, giving, and sowing. The Height goes strange — the new domain entered, the wonder made and met, the comfort of already-knowing refused, the summit's pride watched for, and the light spent down on purpose as it begins to wane. The Ingathering turns backward and clear-eyed — the year weighed, the made things named, the Cold's takings counted without cruelty, the strength banked and the load pared, the Fast kept, the dead spoken and the works that still run named with Manet and nothing promised past it, and the descent walked down on purpose to the foot of the longest night, where the year began.

One Turning falls at the close of every seven days — the Account weighed, the next aim set — so the weeks remain the year in miniature. Build no day around its moral; build it around its image and its task, and let the meaning be the thing the reader makes, not the thing the page tells them. The whole reader is one law, repeated until it is a year, and a year that turns back into itself: not found, made; not at a stroke, by the next true cut, this morning.

On the Day in Hand

The year is too long to lift and the life longer still, and that was never the unit you were asked to carry. You were asked for the morning in your hand — this one, with its cold and its small true cut. Make it, and close the book, and let the day have what is left. The sun will turn whether you mark it or not. The wheel is whole now — all four seasons cut, the last morning folding back into the first — and so the reader has no final page; it only sets one thing in your way before the noise begins: a single morning, made before it could make you, and then the next, and the next, until the made mornings are a year, and the year turns and is another, and the years a life, and the life a light that goes on without the hand that struck it.
