Business Paper 1 — Marketing and People
Battle Card
WBS11 — Battle Card (Unit 1: Marketing and People)
Provenance (2026-09-28). Built from
research/veridian/WBS11-verified-facts.md(all 13 sections, read in full) and cross-checked against the two other WBS11 technique-hub documents —forge-exam-technique-guide.mdandcodex-definitions-and-application-bank.md— so nothing below duplicates their content wholesale; where an item also appears there, it is compressed to a one-line cue here, not re-explained. Two items are sourced independently from the exam-technique guide's own fresh primary-source check of January 2025 and October 2024 (marked †), since those two series postdate the facts bank's own review. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Pearson Edexcel. Every quotation is a short, attributed fragment (kept under roughly fifteen words); no question, extract or full mark-scheme passage is reproduced. This is a last-look reference, not a re-teach — for the reasoning behind any line here, follow the citation back to the source document.
1. The paper, in ten seconds
2 hours · 80 marks · 3 sections · no optionality — every question is compulsory [SPEC p.37].
| Section | Content | Marks | Ladder |
|---|---|---|---|
| A (Q1) | One business + Extract A | 30 | Define(2)→Calc/Construct or Explain(4)→Analyse(6)→Discuss(8)→Assess(10) |
| B (Q2) | A different, unrelated business + Extract B | 30 | Same five-part ladder again |
| C (Q3) | One essay, drawing on either/both extracts | 20 | Evaluate only |
Assess on this paper caps at 10 marks, not the 12 the same command word carries on Units 3/4 — a smaller ceiling, confirmed across every series checked. Quantitative skills are a minimum 10% of the paper (ratios, %, graphs, index numbers, cost/revenue/profit/break-even) [SPEC Appx.7 p.57] — break-even itself has no confirmed past-paper anchor in the reviewed archive, so treat it as spec-required rather than exam-pattern-confirmed.
2. Command word → what actually scores
| Command | Marks | Structure | One-line rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Define | 2 | Knowledge only, no App/An | Two separately creditable ideas — never the term repeated back |
| Calculate / Construct | 4 | K1 / App2 / An1 | Formula (or axes + original equilibrium) written down before the numbers; unit/£/% sign on the final answer |
| Explain | 4 | K1 / App2 / An1 | Two distinct points of application, not one point restated |
| Analyse | 6 | K2/App2/An2 ×2 chains | Zero evaluative language; every chain tied to the named business, not generic |
| Discuss | 8 | 3 levels, tops L3 (6–8) | Counterbalance must be a developed chain, not one clause ("however, X is expensive") |
| Assess | 10 | 4 levels, tops L4 (8–10) | Close by naming a side and the condition it depends on |
| Evaluate | 20 | 4 levels, tops L4 (15–20) | Conclusion must say something new — a recommendation, not a summary |

3. Formula and definition-cue sheet
- Demand — qty willing and able to buy, at a given price, over a given time period. Trap: defining it as "needs and wants" scores nothing. [MS/PEF, Jan 2024, Q1a]
- Supply — qty suppliers make available, at a given price, over a given time period. [MS, Jan 2024, Q2c]
- PED = %Δ quantity demanded ÷ %Δ price. Always negative — report the sign; the real mark scheme awards 4 marks for a correctly-signed −2.5 but only 3 for an unsigned 2.5. [MS/EXM, Jun 2019, Q1b]
- YED = %Δ quantity demanded ÷ %Δ income. Normal good: YED > 0. Inferior good: YED < 0. Luxury good: YED > 1. Runs backwards too — given a known YED and one %Δ, multiply for the other: %ΔQd = YED × %Δincome. Confirmed twice, six years apart. [MS, Jun 2022, Q2b; PEF, Oct 2024†, Q1b]
- PED and total revenue: inelastic demand (|PED| < 1) → a price rise increases revenue; elastic demand (|PED| > 1) → a price cut increases revenue. First examined Jan 2023 — thin history, so worth over-preparing. [MS, Jan 2023, Q1b]
- Market share % = (business sales ÷ total market sales) × 100 — the recurring loss is a correct calculation with no % sign. [MS/PEF, Jun 2024, Q1b]
- Demand-shift diagram — shift one curve only, label both equilibria: price and quantity move the same direction.
- Supply-shift diagram — mirror image: price and quantity move in opposite directions. [MS, Oct 2021, Q1b]
- Added value = price of the product minus the cost of the inputs used to provide it. [MS, Jun 2019, Q2d]
- Boston Matrix — axes are market share × market growth → cash cow / star / dog / problem child. Real, credited limitation: it is "only a snapshot" with "little or no predictive value." [MS, Jun 2019, Q1e]
- Redundancy-costing pattern (worked, not a universal formula): (salary × months owed ÷ 12) + any bonus, × headcount — the real Deutsche Bank anchor runs ($80,000 × 3/12 + $8,000) × 18,000 = $504m. [MS/QUE, Oct 2021, Q2b]
- Opportunity cost = the value of the next best alternative forgone — not a risk, not a cash cost. A real trap: writing about the risk taken instead of the benefit sacrificed. [PEF, Oct 2024†, Q1c — closes a gap the facts bank had recorded as confirmed-zero]
- Empowerment (non-financial motivator) = the transfer of decision-making authority — a generic "motivating staff" answer scores nothing at this tariff. [PEF, Jan 2025†, Q2a]
4. Top 5 danger warnings — paper-wide, highest confirmed frequency
Ranked by how many independently-confirmed series each pattern recurs in, not by guessed likelihood — no percentage is stated for any of these, only the count of series actually checked.
- Missing or thin counterbalance on Discuss/Assess/Evaluate. The single most repeated note in the paper-wide summary of every series reviewed, June 2019 through January 2025, without exception. A bare "however, X is expensive" is not a developed chain.
- Stakeholder substitution. The question names a stakeholder (employees, passengers, a named individual) and the answer drifts to "impact on the business" instead. Confirmed independently at least five times across six years — profit share (Jun19), airline competition (Jun22), job rotation (Jun24), flexible working (Jan25†) — plus the mirror error, arguing an employer benefit from the employee's side (collective bargaining, Oct21).
- Copying the extract as if it were the answer. "Stand-alone evidence… will not be rewarded" is restated, independently, in at least four separate series' own paper-wide summaries (Jun22, Jan23, Jun23, Jun24).
- Repeating the question's own term on a 2-mark Define. Confirmed at least seven times across six years — qualitative research, competitive advantage, product differentiation, market share, customer satisfaction, social objectives, mass market (Jan25†). A response needs a second, distinct idea, not a restatement.
- Dropping the sign, unit or % on a calculation. Missing negative sign (PED), missing % sign (market share, YED), missing currency symbol (redundancy and other Calculate questions) — confirmed across at least five series: Jun22, Jun23, Jan24, Jun24, Jan25†.
5. Confusion pairs — keep these straight
- Qualitative research ≠ data about product quality — it's opinions and beliefs.
- Test marketing ≠ product trial (two adjacent, genuinely different spec terms).
- Market share ≠ sales revenue or a sales amount.
- Marketing mix (4 Ps) ≠ design mix (function / aesthetics / cost of manufacture).
- Cost of manufacture ≠ selling price.
- Competitive pricing ≠ always-cheap/penetration pricing.
- Entrepreneurial motives (why someone starts a business) ≠ characteristics (what traits they have).
- Mass market ≠ automatically low-price-and-high-competition — the real definition is about market size and broad appeal only. [PEF, Jan 2025†, Q1a]
- A problem described in the source ≠ an entrepreneurial motive for starting the business. [PEF, Jan 2025†, Q2c]
6. What this card deliberately leaves out
No grade boundaries — none exist in any source checked for this paper; signal-frequency-and- boundaries.md §2 documents that search and its null result. No invented likelihood percentages —
every frequency claim above is "confirmed in N series checked," never "N% chance." The full trap
taxonomy with citations lives in forge-exam-technique-guide.md §4; full spec-by-spec definitions
and application phrases live in codex-definitions-and-application-bank.md; sub-point-by-sub-point
sighting counts live in signal-frequency-and-boundaries.md §1. If a topic isn't on this card, it
isn't because it doesn't matter — it's because the real material for it belongs in one of those
three documents instead, and this card only holds what a candidate needs in the last few minutes
before the paper starts.
