Business Paper 2 — Managing Business Activities
Battle Card
Provenance (checked 2026-09-28): research/veridian/WBS12-verified-facts.md read in full (1,222 lines —
16 series June 2019–October 2024, 15 mark schemes, 13 examiner reports); all eight WBS12 lesson files in
content/veridian/curriculum/wbs12/ read directly, in particular each file's own end-of-lesson
reference-card block (cash-flow-and-budgets.ts, external-influences.ts,
inventory-control-and-quality-management.ts, paper-anatomy.ts,
planning-finance-and-forms-of-business.ts, production-productivity-and-capacity.ts,
profit-liquidity-and-business-failure.ts, sales-forecasting-and-break-even.ts) — those eight cards
already exist as real, verified, per-topic condensed lines, but nowhere in this course's material are they
collected into one page; that gap is what this document fills. Also read in full:
codex-definitions-and-application-bank.md (cross-checked so the definition-cues below compress its
already-verified wording rather than restate it at the same depth), forge-exam-technique-guide.md (its
own §2 tariff rules and §4 trap digest — this card's top-5 is a ranked selection from that fuller list,
not a re-derivation), and signal-frequency-and-boundaries.md (checked for which traps have the strongest,
most independently-repeated evidence, which is how the top-5 below were ranked). content/veridian/ question-bank/wbs12.ts checked directly — no formula or definition content lives there to cross-reference.
Every line below is traceable to one of those documents or to a named primary source within them; nothing
here is new research. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Pearson Edexcel.
WBS12 Battle Card — Managing Business Activities
Last-look reference only. Not a re-teach — for mechanism and worked exemplars, use the lesson files above;
for full technique depth, forge-exam-technique-guide.md; for the complete definitions masterlist,
codex-definitions-and-application-bank.md. If a formula or definition you need isn't below, it wasn't
independently verified against a real mark scheme, examiner report or the spec in the material this card
draws on — check the specification's own Appendix 9 (ratios) directly rather than assume the gap means
"not examinable."
1. Paper shape
2 hours, 80 marks, calculator permitted (Appendix 10). Section A (Q1) and Section B (Q2) are each one data extract, five sub-questions, identical 2→4→6→8→10 climb. Section C (Q3) is a single 20-mark Evaluate essay on its own extract — 25% of the paper alone. Flat timing: 1.5 min/mark (~45 min / ~45 min / ~30 min).
| (a)–(e) | Marks | AO split | Levels | Conclusion needed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Define | 2 | AO1 ×2 | No | N/A — extract reference earns zero |
| Calculate / Explain / Construct | 4 | AO1×1, AO2×2, AO3×1 | No | N/A |
| Analyse | 6 | AO1×2, AO2×2, AO3×2 — no AO4 | No | N/A — needs two distinct reasons |
| Discuss | 8 | Levels | 3 (1–2 / 3–5 / 6–8) | No — confirmed 10+ of 13 reports |
| Assess | 10 | Levels | 4 (1–2 / 3–4 / 5–7 / 8–10) | Top band needs "a supported judgement" |
| Q3 Evaluate | 20 | Levels | 4 (1–4 / 5–8 / 9–14 / 15–20) | Top band needs "an effective conclusion that proposes a solution and/or recommendations" |
Assess here = 10 marks, not the 12 Units 3/4 (WBS13/14) use for the same word. Cross-unit (WBS11)
knowledge is fair game at any tariff — expect PED, demand, supply. [verified-facts §"Assessment-objective
and command-word cheat sheet"; paper-anatomy.ts reference-card]
2. Formulas — memorise; Appendix 9 is not supplied in the exam
Break-even / sales (2.3.2.1–3):
- Contribution = selling price − variable cost per unit [spec 2.3.2.3a]
- Break-even output = total fixed costs ÷ contribution [spec 2.3.2.3b–c]
- Break-even revenue = break-even output × selling price [derived,
sales-forecasting-and-break-even.ts] - Margin of safety = actual/budgeted sales − break-even output (units or % of sales) [spec 2.3.2.3d]
Cash flow / budgets (2.3.2.4–5):
- Closing balance = opening balance + net cash flow; that closing balance is next month's opening balance
- Net cash flow = inflows − outflows
- Variance = actual − budgeted; check whether it raises or lowers profit, not the line's direction by habit
— raises profit = favourable, lowers it = adverse [
cash-flow-and-budgets.tsreference-card]
Profit and profitability (2.3.3.1):
- Gross profit = revenue − cost of sales; gross margin = gross profit ÷ revenue × 100 [spec Appendix 9; exemplar 41.67% ms, Jun 2019]
- Operating profit = gross profit − operating expenses; operating margin = operating profit ÷ revenue × 100 [spec Appendix 9]
- Profit for the year = operating profit − interest − tax; profit-for-year margin = profit for the year ÷ revenue × 100 [spec Appendix 9]
Liquidity (2.3.3.2):
- Current ratio = current assets ÷ current liabilities [spec Appendix 9]. ~1.5:1–2:1 read as comfortable in real indicative content [ms, Jan 2023] — below that is thinner, not automatically a crisis.
- Acid test ratio = (current assets − inventories) ÷ current liabilities [ms, Oct 2021, verbatim]. A ratio is meaningless without a comparator — prior year or a similar rival firm [er, Jan 2023].
Resource management (2.3.4.1–3):
- Productivity = output ÷ input ÷ time [ms, Oct 2019, paraphrased]. AVC(labour) = wage ÷ productivity —
rising productivity lowers AVC [
production-productivity-and-capacity.ts] - Capacity utilisation (%) = current output ÷ maximum possible output × 100 [ms, Oct 2024, verbatim components; spec 2.3.4.2a]. The formula ≠ a description of over-/under-utilisation — a Define question wants the formula/plain-English statement, not the consequences.
- Reorder level = buffer inventory + (usage rate × lead time)
- Maximum stock level = buffer inventory + reorder quantity [both: inventory-control diagram, spec 2.3.4.3a]
3. Definition-cues — two components, each independently creditable
Format: term — component 1 + component 2. Extract reference earns zero on every one of these; an example is never a substitute for the missing component.
2.3.1 Planning and finance: Business plan — a document/plan for a business's development + detail on the resources needed [er, Jan 2020]. Personal savings — internal finance + provided/owned by the business owner [ms, Jan 2023]. Venture capital — finance to fund a business + greater risk for the investor [ms, Jun 2019]. Bank loan — external finance + repaid with interest [er, Jan 2021]. Partnership — a type of business/organisation + owned by two or more people [ms, Oct 2024]. Franchising — the franchisor allows the franchisee + to trade under its name ("expanding" alone is not accepted) [er, Jun 2023]. Social enterprise — mainly welfare/environmental objectives + rather than maximising profit (not a charity, not automatically zero-profit) [ms, Jan 2022].
2.3.2 Financial planning: Break-even — total cost equals total revenue OR neither profit nor loss is made (a bare "costs and revenue" mention is not enough for both marks) [ms/er, Oct 2020]. Budget — a financial plan agreed/prepared in advance (an accepted alternative sense: "a cheaper option, often of lower quality") [ms/er, Jun 2022].
2.3.3 Managing finance: Profit — total revenue minus total costs (a bare "revenue − costs" is too vague for full marks) [er, Jan 2020]. Statement of comprehensive income — income and expenditure + a stated time period (a generic "financial document" reference is not accepted) [er, Jan 2021].
2.3.4 Resource management: Inventory — raw materials/work-in-progress + held by a business [ms, Oct 2022]. Production — a process turning raw materials + into finished goods [er, Jun 2023].
2.3.5 External influences: Inflation — a general increase in the price level (of prices generally, not one good) + over a period of time [ms/er, Oct 2021]. Health and safety — measures a business puts in place
- to prevent injury or harm ("wellbeing" alone is not accepted) [er, Oct 2020]. Competitive market — a large number of rivals + competing to increase sales and profit [ms, Oct 2021]. Taxation — how governments raise money + to finance their expenditure [er, Oct 2019]. Demand — the quantity a consumer is willing to buy + at a given price and time (Unit 1 content, legitimately examined here) [ms, Jan 2022]. Supply — the amount producers are willing/able to produce + at a given price/period (also Unit 1 content) [ms, Oct 2022].
4. Tariff reminders, one line each
- Define (2): two separate clauses, not one sentence covering both. Zero extract credit. Abbreviations accepted if precise (TFC/TVC accepted for "total costs") [er, Jan 2025].
- Calculate/Explain/Construct (4): missing the £/$/% sign caps the mark at 3/4 even with the right number — check the question's own rounding instruction, it is graded [verified-facts cross-series constants; er, Jun 2025]. A bare, exactly-right final answer (number + unit + rounding) earns full marks with no working shown — but only if it's exactly right; show working so a wrong final figure can still earn method credit [ms/er, Jun 2025 & Jan 2025].
- Analyse (6): two independently-developed reasons, stated directly (not as a definition — "it is not possible to apply or analyse the definition") [verified-facts cross-series constants]. No AO4 here — don't spend a sentence weighing the two reasons against each other.
- Discuss (8): no conclusion required, but a genuine, developed two-sided argument is — a one-sided answer cannot reach the top level regardless of accuracy [both 2025 Paper Summaries].
- Assess (10): needs more depth than Discuss and a stated, reasoned preference — "leading to a supported judgement," not just balanced awareness [ms, verified level descriptors].
- Evaluate/Q3 (20): needs an effective conclusion that proposes a solution/recommendation, not a summary of both sides. Extract-restating rather than answering the actual question is the clearest documented failure mode at this tariff [er, Jan 2025].
5. Top-5 danger warnings — ranked by independent, cross-series repetition
- Quality-management term confusion (control vs assurance vs circles vs TQM). Seen independently in 3
of 13 examiner reports reviewed (Oct 2020 Q1d, Oct 2021 Q3, Jun 2022 Q1d) — the single most repeated
named confusion in the whole archive. Already the subject of its own disambiguation table in
inventory-control-and-quality-management.ts. [verified-facts 2.3.4; signal-frequency-and-boundaries §1] - Copying/repeating the extract instead of using it. "Application marks will not be awarded for simply repeating evidence in the extracts" recurs near-verbatim in all 13 examiner reports reviewed, and is reconfirmed at the 20-mark tariff specifically in January 2025 Q3. Live at every tariff on the paper — 2 through 20 marks. [verified-facts cross-series constants; forge-exam-technique-guide §4]
- Missing the unit/% sign, or ignoring a stated rounding instruction, on Calculate/Explain/Construct. Caps the mark one below full — confirmed in every series with a Calculate question reviewed, June 2019–October 2024, and reinforced in a new form (an ignored "two decimal places" instruction) in June 2025. [verified-facts cross-series constants; er, Jun 2025]
- Writing a definition instead of the two direct reasons on Analyse. "It is not possible to apply or analyse the definition" — seen in 7 of 13 examiner reports reviewed (Oct 2019 onward), and both January 2025 and June 2025 independently confirm stating the two reasons directly is the stronger route, since a definition can't itself be developed further. [verified-facts cross-series constants; er, Jan 2025 & Jun 2025]
- Business cycle under-preparedness, including confusion with the product life cycle. January 2023's Q2(c) records candidates scoring zero for showing no understanding of the business cycle and describing the product life cycle instead (verbatim-corrected quote — the source PDF's own apparent typo says "business plan," not "cycle" — see verified-facts' "Errors found in old material" for why the exact wording matters here). Two years later, January 2025's Q3 independently records candidates lacking understanding of the business cycle itself, on a different question at a different tariff. Two separate series, two different failure angles, same underlying gap. [verified-facts 2.3.5; er, Jan 2025]
What this card deliberately leaves out
No grade-boundary figures (real, verified ones exist in signal-frequency-and-boundaries.md — a boundary
is set fresh each series, so quoting one here would invite treating a past number as a target rather than a
range) and no likelihood percentages for what "will" come up — this course's own standing rule is "seen in
N of M series checked," never an invented probability. Full definitions prose lives in
codex-definitions-and-application-bank.md; full trap-taxonomy (40+ entries) lives across the eight lesson
files, cross-referenced by name in forge-exam-technique-guide.md §4 rather than reproduced again here.
