Business Paper 2 — Managing Business Activities
Topic Brief: Inventory Control and Quality Management
Provenance (2026-09-28): research/veridian/WBS12-verified-facts.md read in full (1,221 lines) and
grepped for every mention of inventory, buffer, JIT, waste minimisation, lean production, quality
control/assurance/circles, TQM and Kaizen. content/veridian/curriculum/wbs12/inventory-control-and- quality-management.ts (675 lines) and this folder's existing codex-deep-dive-inventory-control-and- quality-management.md, forge-exam-technique-guide.md, codex-definitions-and-application-bank.md
and signal-frequency-and-boundaries.md were all read first so nothing below restates their content —
the CODEX deep-dive already carries a full mechanism-by-mechanism teach and its own exam-angle
synthesis; this document is a shorter, standalone frequency/pattern brief for this one topic only, cross-
checked against but not copied from it. content/veridian/question-bank/wbs12.ts checked directly
(grepped for the same terms) — zero matches, no overlap. One genuinely new anchor was found in this
pass and is not cited anywhere else in this course's WBS12 material: January 2024, Q3, Freewing
Model Technology Co Ltd — the quality-management half of that 20-mark Evaluate, re-extracted directly
from the primary mark scheme
(/Users/neosteinhoff/Documents/SOL/Old/P2 Materials/Business/January_2024/Mark_scheme_-_Unit_2_ WBS12_-_January_2024NEWUnit_2.pdf, pdftotext -layout). The sibling CODEX deep-dive for
production-productivity-and-capacity.ts already anchors this same question's lead-in-times half
(2.3.4.1e) but explicitly does not touch its quality-management half, and no document in this folder
had picked it up for 2.3.4.4 until now. The October 2022 Define-'inventory' anchor and the October
2024 Golcar Fisheries/EIZO anchors were re-confirmed against their primary mark schemes the same way
(pdftotext -layout against the local archive) rather than trusted from a secondary summary alone.
SIGNAL Topic Master Brief: Inventory Control and Quality Management
Spec: 2.3.4.3 (inventory control) and 2.3.4.4 (quality management), WBS12 Unit 2 — Managing Business Activities.
Every real series that has tested this topic
Ten real question-level anchors, across 8 of the 16 series in the local archive (June 2019–October 2024), were found for this topic specifically:
| Series | Question | Marks / command | Spec point | Business | Real angle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 2019 | Q2(e) | 10, Assess | 2.3.4.4c Kaizen | Zamtel | Will Kaizen increase success — sector fit (service vs manufacturing), employee buy-in, timing |
| Oct 2020 | Q1(c) | 6, Analyse | 2.3.4.3d JIT | Lotus Garments Co. | Two problems: running out of inventory; reliance on suppliers |
| Oct 2020 | Q1(d) | 8, Discuss | 2.3.4.4b TQM | Lotus Garments Co. | Importance of TQM — process readiness, workforce scale, too-early-to-judge |
| Oct 2021 | Q3 | 20, Evaluate | 2.3.4.4a QC vs QA | Lena Lighting / Mugz / CF Fashions | Always better to use QA over QC? — three named businesses, four distinct conditions |
| Jun 2022 | Q1(d) | 8, Discuss | 2.3.4.4a quality circles | R B Rustico | Beneficial? — motivation gain vs lost production time |
| Oct 2022 | Q1(a) | 2, Define | 2.3.4.3 'inventory' | — | Two-part definition: raw materials/work-in-progress + held by a business |
| Oct 2023 | Q2(e) | 10, Assess | 2.3.4.3e waste minimisation | Grupo Tamazula | Difficulty of keeping waste to a minimum — perishability, forecasting, transport |
| Jan 2024 | Q3 (quality half) | 20, Evaluate | 2.3.4.4a/d quality management & competitive advantage | Freewing | Shared 20-marker with lead-in times (2.3.4.1e) — quality tied directly to price point and a one-year warranty |
| Oct 2024 | Q2(d) | 8, Discuss | 2.3.4.3b buffer inventory | Golcar Fisheries | Drawbacks of holding buffer stock — space, wastage, opportunity cost vs continuity, reputation |
| Oct 2024 | Q3 | 20, Evaluate | 2.3.4.3d JIT (shared w/ 2.3.3.2b factoring) | EIZO | JIT vs factoring to improve liquidity |
The real mark-tariff pattern
This topic is unusually spread across the tariff range rather than concentrated at one level: 1 Define (2), 1 Analyse (6), 3 Discuss (8), 2 Assess (10), 3 Evaluate (20) — eight of the ten anchors are levels-based questions, not short AO1–3 answers. It has reached the Section C 20-mark essay three times in the anchors found, but only once (Oct 2021, QC vs QA) as a question sitting entirely inside 2.3.4.4 — the other two real 20-mark appearances (Jan 2024, Oct 2024) both shared the essay with an adjacent spec area rather than standing alone. No real anchor was found for 2.3.4.3a (diagram interpretation as its own examined point, as opposed to the lesson's own derived diagram), 2.3.4.3c (implications of poor inventory control as a distinct named angle), or 2.3.4.3f (lean production) — the CODEX deep-dive already flags 2.3.4.3f specifically as a zero-match term across all 16 series; that finding is confirmed, not repeated in full, here.
Recurring context/angle type
- Quality-management sub-terms confused with each other, independently, in 3 of 16 series (Oct 2020, Oct 2021, Jun 2022) — control, assurance, circles and TQM mistaken for one another or for "quality" in general. This is the single most repeated named trap for this topic in the whole archive.
- Buffer/waste stock carries a real cost even when given away — Oct 2024's Golcar Fisheries question exists specifically because candidates assumed give-away stock had "no negative implications," a genuine content misconception, not only a technique slip.
- JIT is tested as a two-sided trade-off, not a one-sided benefit: Oct 2020 and Oct 2024 both anchor JIT to a named business weighing a bounded holding cost against an unbounded stockout or supplier risk.
- When this topic reaches the 20-mark essay, it usually isn't alone — 2 of its 3 real 20-mark appearances shared the question with lead-in times or with liquidity/factoring.
- Every full worked anchor is tied to a real, named business — Lotus Garments Co., R B Rustico, Lena Lighting/Mugz/CF Fashions, Zamtel, Grupo Tamazula, Freewing, Golcar Fisheries, EIZO — never a generic "Company A."
If this topic appears, here's what to expect
Do not assume this topic only shows up as the big essay: a plain 2-mark Define on 'inventory' itself is real, confirmed content. At 8 marks, expect a Discuss testing one clearly-bounded sub-concept (TQM, quality circles, or buffer inventory) against a named business, built as benefit-versus-cost — each of those three has its own real anchor above. At 20 marks, be ready for this topic to be paired with lead-in times or with liquidity/factoring rather than examined alone; the one case where it did stand alone (QC vs QA, Oct 2021) is the anchor most worth knowing in full. Above everything else, drill control / assurance / circles / TQM side by side before revising anything else here — it is the most independently repeated trap this paper has, seen in 3 of 16 series checked.
