Business Paper 2 — Managing Business Activities
Topic Brief: Profit Liquidity and Business Failure
Provenance (checked 2026-09-28): research/veridian/WBS12-verified-facts.md read in full and grepped for
every profit/liquidity/business-failure hit (spec 2.3.3); codex-deep-dive-profit-liquidity-and-business- failure.md read in full — its worked exemplars and bullet audits are cited, not re-derived;
profit-liquidity-and-business-failure.ts checked by grep (its four existing anchors — Jan 2020 Q2e, Oct
2022 Q2e, Jan 2023 Q3 AvN, Oct 2023 Q3 Amazon Kindle — confirmed present, not reproduced);
signal-frequency-and-boundaries.md, codex-definitions-and-application-bank.md and
question-bank/wbs12.ts checked (no 2.3.3 entry in the last). New work this pass: the facts bank names
several 2.3.3 anchors without a question letter or tariff, and the two existing technique-hub documents
disagree on the section's series count (frequency-and-boundaries states 8 of 18; CODEX's summary sentence
states 10 but its own table separately cites an 11th, June 2019). Rather than pick one, every question
paper/mark scheme below was re-opened with pdftotext -layout (~/Documents/SOL/Old/P2 Materials/ Business/ for 2019–2024; ~/Downloads/PAPERI/IAL_Unit2_Complete_2024_2025/IAL_Materials/Business/ for
2025) and checked for its exact letter, tariff and command word. This surfaced two real sub-questions not
itemised as their own anchor anywhere else in this course: October 2024 Q1(c) (6-mark Analyse, business
failure) and June 2025 Q2(c) (6-mark Analyse, supplier trade credit). Denominator: 18 series (the
facts bank's own 16, plus January and June 2025), matching this folder's sibling briefs.
WBS12 SIGNAL — Topic Master Brief: Profit, Liquidity and Business Failure
Spec 2.3.3, items 1–3. Mechanism, worked ratios and the two full level-exemplars (AvN, Amazon
Kindle) live in profit-liquidity-and-business-failure.ts; fresh numeric micro-examples (JIT, factoring)
and two brand-new 2025 anchors live in the CODEX deep-dive. This brief adds the piece neither of those
does: every real series that has actually tested this topic, at what tariff, in what recurring shape —
independently re-verified against the primary PDFs rather than assembled from citations alone.
1. Every real series confirmed testing this topic
Seen in 11 of 18 series checked — 16 real, distinct sub-questions across those 11 series:

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 2019 | 1(b) | 4 Calculate | 2.3.3.1c | (Extract B, unnamed in the source) | Gross profit margin — 41.67% |
| Jan 2020 | 1(a) | 2 Define | 2.3.3.1a | Tharindu's T-shirt business | Verbatim "total revenue minus total costs" |

| Jan 2024 | 1(e) | 10 Assess | 2.3.3.3 | The Rex Cinema | Causes of business failure |
| Oct 2024 | 1(c) | 6 Analyse | 2.3.3.3 | Golcar Fisheries (competitors) | Government legislation causing failure |
| Oct 2024 | 3 | 20 Evaluate | 2.3.3.2 (shared 2.3.4) | EIZO | JIT vs factoring for liquidity |
| Jan 2025 | 2(d) | 8 Discuss | 2.3.3.1 | Belmont Estate | Price rise's effect on profit |
| Jun 2025 | 2(b) | 4 Calculate | 2.3.3.1 | Wilko | Gross profit % decrease — 4.6% |
| Jun 2025 | 2(c) | 6 Analyse | 2.3.3.2b | Wilko | Why suppliers offered trade credit |
| Jun 2025 | 2(d) | 8 Discuss | 2.3.3.3 | Wilko | Business failure — external causes only? |
Not found in Oct 2019, Oct 2020, Jan 2021, Jun 2021, Jan 2022, Jun 2023 or Jun 2024 — a real gap across those 7 series, not a claim the topic is thin overall.
2. The mark-tariff pattern
By sub-item: profit (2.3.3.1) is the most-tested at 8 of the 16 anchors; liquidity (2.3.3.2) and business failure (2.3.3.3) each account for 4. By tariff: 4-mark Calculate appears 4 times, 10-mark Assess 4 times, 20-mark Evaluate 3 times, 6-mark Analyse and 8-mark Discuss twice each, 2-mark Define once. A pattern worth naming explicitly: every one of the three confirmed 20-mark anchors sits on liquidity or business failure — none on profit alone. Profit's highest confirmed tariff across 8 real anchors is 10 (three times) or 8 (Belmont Estate, Jan 2025); a 20-mark essay built solely around profit has no precedent in the 18 series checked. Command word also tracks sub-item closely: 3 of the 4 real 10-mark Assess anchors ask how a business can raise its profit or profitability; the fourth (Jan 2024, Rex Cinema) is the one business-failure exception at that tariff.
3. Recurring context/angle
A single extract carrying the whole 2.3.3 arc across one series' Section B is a real, repeated shape, not a one-off: June 2025's Wilko extract drives a Calculate (profit), an Analyse (liquidity/trade credit) and a Discuss (business failure) in immediate succession — Q2(b), (c), (d) — and June 2022's R B Rustico does the narrower version of the same thing within profit alone (Q1(b) calculate, then Q1(e) assess the same mechanism). This is the same calculation-feeds-interpretation pairing already documented for cash flow and budgets in this folder's sibling brief, now confirmed on a second topic.
No dominant business sector recurs here, unlike external influences (export-exposed businesses) or cash flow (retail-only anchors): the 11 series span a furniture manufacturer (R B Rustico), a chocolate producer (Belmont Estate, Dapaah), a UK high-street retailer (Wilko), a fish-and-chip shop (Golcar Fisheries), a cinema (The Rex Cinema), a monitor manufacturer (EIZO) and a multinational tech platform (Amazon) — genuine sector diversity, worth naming as an absence of pattern rather than forcing one.
Section placement is close to even: 6 anchors sit in Section A (Q1), 7 in Section B (Q2), 3 in Section C (Q3) — no strong lean either way, unlike cash-flow-and-budgets' Q1 bias.
4. If this topic appears — what to expect
Most likely: a 4-mark Calculate built on a real ratio or margin (gross/operating/net profit margin, current ratio or acid test), frequently the opening sub-question of the extract it belongs to, continuing into a 6-mark Analyse or 10-mark Assess reading a specific consequence out of the same figures — the Wilko and R B Rustico pattern above. If the topic carries a 20-mark Q3, expect liquidity or business failure as the theme, not profit alone — no real precedent exists for a profit-only 20-marker in 18 series checked. Two recent series (Jan 2025, Jun 2025) both used 8-mark Discuss for this topic; both required weighing genuine two-sided arguments (price-rise trade-offs, internal-vs-external causes) rather than a one-sided case, the same Discuss-question discipline documented elsewhere in this course's WBS12 material.
No likelihood percentage or grade boundary is claimed anywhere above. Every frequency and pattern statement is "seen in N of M series/anchors checked," traceable to a named series, question letter and tariff, independently re-verified against the primary question paper or mark scheme for this pass.
