SIGNAL Topic Master Brief — Binomial Expansion (WMA12, spec 4.5)
What this is, and isn't
A single-topic zoom-in on the frequency/expectation layer for one spec item. signal-frequency-and- boundaries.md gives this topic one row in a paper-wide table; codex-deep-dive-binomial- expansion.md proves the theory and works the two-unknown mechanism in full; forge-exam-technique- guide.md covers the formula-choice trigger as general exam craft. This document repeats none of
that — it pulls only the frequency/pattern/expectation facts those three already established into
one narrow reference, and adds the one angle none states explicitly: what to expect before opening
the question, based only on real citations.
Real frequency: seen in 2 of 20 series checked
The archive has 20 series with a question paper and mark scheme read (June 2019–January 2026)
and 17 with a published examiner report (WMA12-verified-facts.md §5). Binomial expansion (spec
4.5) is individually confirmed tested in 2 of those 20 series — January 2024 and June 2025 — with
June 2025 contributing a second paper (its "01R" regional variant), so the honest count is 2 series
/ 3 papers. This matches signal-frequency-and-boundaries.md's own row exactly; it is not a new
count, it is the same floor restated at topic scale. As with every row in that table, a floor of 2
does not mean the topic is rare — spec 4.5 is a compulsory, recurring item every series — it means
only that two series have been individually verified by citation so far.
Every real series/question that has tested this topic
| Series | Question | Marks | Real angle tested | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January 2024 | Q2 | 3 (M1 A1 A1, flat, no dependency) | Single coefficient, one bracket, positive integer given | WMA12-verified-facts.md §6.5 |
| June 2025 | Q1 | 6 | Formula-form choice (combinatorial vs. general series), given | WMA12-verified-facts.md §6.5; signal-frequency-and-boundaries.md's June 2025 per-question table |
| June 2025, Regional "01R" | Q7 | within 3–7 (exact split not published in the sources read) | Two unknowns ( and ) recovered simultaneously from | WMA12-verified-facts.md §6.5 |
No fourth real citation exists in any document read for this pass — binomial-expansion.ts itself
cites only these same three (Jan 2024 Q2; June 2025 Q1; June 2025 01R Q7) wherever it references a
real series. The material genuinely runs out here; nothing below stretches past it.
Real mark-tariff pattern
Every confirmed instance is a single, self-contained question, not marks scattered across an unrelated multi-topic item — consistent with spec 4.5 being one flat, undotted spec line. Marks observed: 3 at the one anchor with a full published mark scheme (Jan 2024 Q2), 6 on the fully-mapped June 2025 Q1; the regional 01R Q7 falls somewhere in the same 3–7 band, exact split not found in any source read. Where the structure is known (Jan 2024 Q2), it runs as a flat M1 A1 A1 with no dM/ddM chain — method, unsimplified accuracy, final isolated-value accuracy — unlike the multi-stage dependent chains seen on this paper's larger topics (the circle, differentiation).
Real recurring context/angle across the series checked
Two genuine patterns recur across the three real citations, not one:
- The same formula-choice decision appears in both series checked, with opposite outcomes. The P2 booklet prints the combinatorial form and the general real-index series on the same page even though spec 4.5 restricts P2 to positive integer only. With one unknown, examiners record candidates handling this "generally...very well" (June 2025, Q1). With two unknowns in the same bracket, the same choice becomes the deciding factor in whether a candidate can start the question at all — "many candidates struggled to make a start...due to the fact that there were two unknowns" (June 2025, Regional 01R, Q7). This is the topic's one confirmed difficulty escalator: not the theorem itself, but which of two booklet formulas is reached for once a second unknown is added.
- This topic has opened a paper at least once, breaking the usual question-1 pattern. The facts
bank records Proof anchoring Q1 in "almost every series" checked (§6.1) — but June 2025's own
examiner report confirms directly that "the first question of the paper tested the binomial
expansion" that series, with Proof pushed to Q10 instead (
forge-exam-technique-guide.md). A candidate should not assume this topic is saved for the middle of the paper.
If this topic appears: what to expect
- Expect a compact, standalone question worth 3–7 marks — not a topic woven through several unrelated parts.
- Expect it to test matching the term index to the requested power before anything else: the confirmed dominant error on the one anchor with full error data is an off-by-one/off-by-two mismatch between and the power asked for, not a conceptual gap in the theorem.
- Default to the combinatorial form, never the general series — confirmed the tractable route in both series checked, and the only route the spec (4.5) actually requires.
- If the question gives two unknowns in one bracket, expect it to be markedly harder than the single-unknown version — the one confirmed instance of this sub-case is also the topic's hardest real citation.
- Once a value is found, isolate it explicitly — a correct number left unlabelled inside a fuller expansion or a Pascal's-triangle row is a confirmed, named way to lose the final mark even with correct working underneath it.
- Do not assume this topic sits mid-paper — it has opened a paper at least once in the series checked.
What this document deliberately leaves out
No proof of why the two booklet formulas agree for positive integer (codex-deep-dive-binomial- expansion.md Part 2) and no worked mechanism for the two-unknown sub-case (same document, Part 5).
No general exam-timing or self-mark-checklist material (forge-exam-technique-guide.md). No
percentage, likelihood, or grade-boundary claim of any kind — frequency is stated only as "seen in N
of M series checked," per this course's standing discipline; paper-wide grade boundaries live in
signal-frequency-and-boundaries.md Part 2, and none is topic-specific.
