Topic Brief: Harmonic Form
Provenance: compiled 2026-09-29, from research/veridian/WMA13-verified-facts.md (this course's primary, provenance-checked WMA13 source — 13 real series checked in total, 8 read start-to-finish with full mark schemes and examiner reports: Oct 2020, Oct 2021, Jan 2022, Jun 2022, Oct 2022, Jun 2023, Jan 2024, Jan 2025; 3 more mark-schemes-only checked for general topic-coverage cross-checking: Jan 2023, Oct 2023, Jun 2024; a further 2 checked for other, unrelated topics only: Oct 2024, Jun 2026), cross-checked against this folder's codex-deep-dive-harmonic-form.md, signal-frequency-and-boundaries.md, and the sibling signal-topic-brief-compound-and-double-angle-formulae.md so this brief does not restate their content. No new primary-source material was pulled for this pass — this is a synthesis, narrowed to one specific construction, of what those documents already establish.
SIGNAL Topic Master Brief: Harmonic Form (WMA13, spec 2.3)
What this document is, and how it differs from its sibling
The sibling signal-topic-brief-compound-and-double-angle-formulae.md already covers spec 2.3 broadly, including this same paper's one harmonic-form anchor, bundled alongside double-angle equation-solving and multi-angle identities. This document does not repeat that bundle. It isolates the one narrow construction — writing as or — and reports its frequency, tariff, and context on its own terms, separately from the broader 2.3 topic count. The mechanism itself (sign cases, derivation, half-angle handling) lives in harmonic-form.ts and codex-deep-dive-harmonic-form.md; this brief only cites and classifies exam appearances.
Frequency
Seen in 1 of the 11 WMA13 series whose mark schemes were checked for general topic coverage: October 2020. That is the same count codex-deep-dive-harmonic-form.md §6 already reaches independently ("across the eight series read in full and the eleven series' mark schemes checked… exactly one real past-paper question… was located that tests spec 2.3's r cos/r sin(θ±α) construction head-on"). Two further series (October 2024, June 2026) were reviewed in this course's research, but only for other, named topics (differentiation and functions/modulus/exponentials respectively) — whether either contains a harmonic-form question was not checked, so they are excluded from both the numerator and the denominator here rather than silently counted as "not tested." This is a genuinely thin evidence base, and the brief says so rather than rounding it up.
The one real anchor, cited by series and question
| Series | Question | Marks | What it actually tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 2020 | Q7(a) | 3 | Construct for , , : exact , in radians to 3 d.p. |
| Oct 2020 | Q7(b) | 2 | Apply the construction to to find the model's minimum height. |
| Oct 2020 | Q7(c) | 4 | Solve for — i.e. solve the constructed harmonic form set equal to a constant, on a half-angle argument. |
Total: 9 marks, all inside one question. No other series located anywhere in this course's WMA13 research transcribes a question that tests the construction itself as its own step.
Mark-tariff pattern
The one confirmed instance never appears as a small, bolted-on part. It structures an entire 9-mark question, and the 9 marks split into three unequal, functionally distinct pieces: 3 marks to construct and (strict on form — the mark scheme's own words are "do not allow decimals for this [R] mark" and "the degree equivalent α = awrt 75.96° is A0"); 2 marks to apply the construction to a real-world extreme value (here, a minimum, found without calculus); and 4 marks to solve the constructed form for the original variable, recovering a half-angle argument. No series in this research shows the construction tested for fewer than 3 marks, and no series shows it tested in isolation from an applied second or third part — every real instance located folds it into a modelling or optimisation context immediately afterward.
Recurring context and angle type
With only one head-on anchor, "recurring" here means recurring within that single question's own structure, not across series — stated plainly rather than inflated:
- A real-world modelling context, not bare algebra. The construction is immediately reused inside , a seabird-height model — the paper does not ask for and stop there.
- A half-angle argument. Spec 2.3's own guidance names "application to half angles," and this is the only real question confirming it: the wave's argument is , so recovering from a solved needs an extra doubling step beyond the ordinary "shift the angle back."
- An optimisation via the wave's range, not calculus. Finding the model's minimum height requires maximising the denominator's wave term — the examiner report's own words: "they did not realise that for the fraction to be a minimum the denominator had to be a maximum." Minimising the whole expression and maximising the wave inside it point in opposite directions, and that inversion is what the report flags as the real source of confusion.
If this topic appears — what to expect
Based on the one confirmed instance: do not expect a bare "convert to " question with nothing riding on it. Expect the construction to open a longer, applied question — most plausibly a modelling context — where the marks are strict on exact form and stated unit, and where a later part either asks for a maximum/minimum read directly off the wave's range or asks you to solve the constructed form for the original variable, possibly through a half-angle or other rescaled argument requiring an extra recovery step.
Honest gaps
Only one series contributes a transcribed, verifiable harmonic-form-construction question anywhere in this course's WMA13 sources. No claim is made about how often this construction appears relative to the broader 2.3 bucket (that is the sibling brief's job, at "5 of 13"), and no likelihood, percentage, or grade-boundary claim is made anywhere above — every frequency figure here is a "seen in N of M series checked" count, traceable to codex-deep-dive-harmonic-form.md §6 or research/veridian/WMA13-verified-facts.md §5/§9 directly.
