Diagram Masterclass
Provenance: written 2026-09-29. This document answers a scoping question — does WME01 need a standalone "Diagram/Graph Masterclass" — rather than assuming one. Read in full before writing a word of verdict below: research/veridian/WME01-verified-facts.md (§1 spec guidance text, §4 topics 2/3/6, §9 audit entries for the kinematics and moments lessons); every file already in this folder (forge-exam-technique-guide.md in full, codex-formula-and-method-bank.md §2.6/§2.8, codex-deep-dive-kinematics-constant-acceleration-two-stage-motion.md §4, codex-deep-dive-resultant-forces-and-bearings.md §2.2); and content/veridian/curriculum/wme01/kinematics-constant-acceleration-two-stage-motion.ts (its own diagram block and trap-taxonomy). No new primary-source PDF was fetched for this pass — every claim below traces to one of the documents just named, each of which already traces its own claims to a real spec, mark-scheme, or examiner-report PDF. WME01 — Diagram/Graph Masterclass: does it apply?
Pearson Edexcel IAL Mathematics, Unit M1: Mechanics 1
The honest verdict
Yes, diagrams and graphs are a genuine, distinct, separately-markable skill on this paper — but only for one specific case (kinematics velocity–time / speed–time graphs), and that exact case is already fully, honestly, and repeatedly documented elsewhere in this folder. Writing a fourth full treatment of the same three real examples would be duplication, which this course's own standing rule ("add something genuinely new, never duplicate what's already there") forbids. This document is therefore short by design: it states the real verdict, gives the evidence trail once, and points to where the full technique already lives — rather than re-narrating it.
What is actually, distinctly mark-scheme-credited
A velocity–time (or speed–time) graph carries its own, separately-awarded marks, independent of the suvat working built from it. Three real, named instances, already verified in this course's own sources:
- Jan 2023 Q1 — a three-phase journey graph (accelerate, cruise, decelerate) over an unknown time . The examiner report states plainly that "the mark for the shape of the graph was not given to symmetrical graphs or to those where the deceleration section was steeper than the acceleration section" — a mark for the shape alone, distinct from the area-equation working that follows it. (
WME01-verified-facts.md§4 topic 3.) - Jan 2025 Q2(a), 3 marks, all B marks — one for the correct shape, one for correct time-axis labels, one for correct speed-axis labels. The mark scheme's own note requires the shape to "start on the vertical axis and not at the origin," with B0 firing on "any extra continuous lines." (
forge-exam-technique-guide.md§2.) - June 2025 Q3(c) — B1 for "correct V shape with a longer 2nd line and the vertex on the t-axis," B0 for a continuous vertical line at the wrong point, plus a follow-through B1 for the three numeric values marked on the axes. (
forge-exam-technique-guide.md§2.)
The generalisable rule those three instances support: the shape itself, the starting point, the presence/absence of a corner, and the axis labels are each independently checkable and independently markable, before a single suvat equation is written. That rule, the method for drawing to it, and a worked short-check are already built out step-by-step in codex-formula-and-method-bank.md §2.6 ("The velocity-time graph — construction and the B-marks it actually carries"), and the deeper theoretical layer — why a displacement–time graph shows no corner where a velocity–time graph shows one, and why a speed–time graph only diverges from velocity–time once a particle reverses direction — is already built out in codex-deep-dive-kinematics-constant-acceleration-two-stage-motion.md §4. Neither is repeated here.
What is genuinely not separately credited
Force diagrams, triangles-of-forces, and moments/rod diagrams do not carry their own B-mark on this paper. This course's own research — 17 series plus two fully re-mined 2025 series — has never found a mark-scheme line reading "B1: correct force diagram" outside the kinematics velocity-time-graph family (forge-exam-technique-guide.md, "Genuine gaps flagged" section). What the real record shows instead:
- A correctly drawn triangle of forces can be the method that earns an M mark, not a diagram mark of its own — Jun 2024 Q2's mark scheme credits "a correct triangle with lengths and the angle... seen or implied," explicitly noting the diagram's own arrows are not required. (
codex-deep-dive-resultant-forces-and-bearings.md§2.2.) - A rod/moments diagram's value is in the reasoning it supports (which reaction goes to zero when the rod tilts), not a drawing mark — already covered as a confirmed B1 line tied to that reasoning, not to the sketch itself (
WME01-verified-facts.md§9,moments-rods-on-two-pivots.tsaudit entry). - Where a diagram carries no mark at all, examiners still name it as the difference between a correct and incorrect solution — Jan 2025's report on a moments question states unsuccessful candidates "would have benefited by drawing diagrams," and a connected-particles report recommends a separate diagram per particle. (
forge-exam-technique-guide.md§2; method already built out incodex-formula-and-method-bank.md§2.8.)

Why no new masterclass follows
A masterclass exists to teach something not already taught. Every real, verified fact about how this paper marks a diagram or a graph — the three named shape/B-mark instances, the construction method, the theoretical graph-family distinctions, the triangle-of-forces exception, and the explicit statement of where no diagram mark exists at all — is already written down, cross-referenced, and honestly scoped in the six documents above. Producing a seventh restatement of the same three primary-source quotes would not deepen a student's technique; it would only duplicate material this course's own standing rule says not to duplicate. If a future series is mined and turns up a genuinely new diagram/graph mark-scheme instance not covered above, the right home for it is forge-exam-technique-guide.md §2 (extending the existing, already-cited pattern) or codex-formula-and-method-bank.md §2.6, not a new file.
Genuine gaps flagged
- This document performed no new primary-source extraction; it is a scoping/routing document only, and says so.
- The "no B1 for a force diagram anywhere in the archive" finding is bounded by the 17+2 series this course has actually reviewed (stated with that same bound in
forge-exam-technique-guide.md); a series outside that set could in principle contain one.
