Overhead press pattern

Standing barbell press, seated dumbbell press, machine press.

What the pattern is responsible for

Shoulder flexion overhead, driven mainly by the anterior deltoid with real triceps and upper-chest contribution. Standing versions add a genuine whole-body bracing and core-stability demand that seated versions remove.

Tier 1 — Equivalent

Seated dumbbell press ↔ Standing barbell press, for the shoulder-specific stimulus. The deltoid and triceps loading is very similar; what differs is the stability and bracing demand, which is a real training variable but not one that changes the muscle-targeting outcome for hypertrophy purposes.

Machine shoulder press. Directly equivalent to a seated dumbbell press for muscle targeting, with the stability demand further reduced — useful when you want to isolate the shoulder stimulus specifically or push closer to true failure safely.

Tier 2 — Close, with a stated cost

Landmine press. A genuine anterior-delt and upper-chest stimulus at an angled path that some lifters find more comfortable on the shoulder joint than a straight vertical press. The cost: the resistance profile is meaningfully different from a true vertical press, so treat it as a related-but-distinct exercise rather than a like-for-like swap.

Tier 3 — Last resort

Pike push-up. Genuine overhead-pressing stimulus at bodyweight-limited loads. Useful for building toward loaded pressing or for equipment-free training; the load ceiling caps out too low to serve as a long-term primary pressing movement.

If it's your shoulder, specifically

Standing overhead pressing is one of the more commonly modified movements for shoulder discomfort, usually from limited overhead mobility rather than the exercise itself being unsuitable. Try a seated dumbbell press with a slightly reduced top range before abandoning overhead pressing entirely — full lockout overhead is where most of the discomfort concentrates for people with restricted thoracic extension.
