Diagnostic Protocol
How to baseline, re-diagnose, and read the report without fooling yourself
3 min read
One real Bluebook test under true conditions tells you more than a month of guessing — and the section split matters more than the total. A diagnostic is only useful if it's official, adaptive, and run like the real thing. This is how to get a number you can plan from.
Sources: College Board Bluebook practice + My Practice; MySatCoach (interpretation). The only realistic baseline is a full Bluebook adaptive test — static PDFs mis-estimate because they can't reproduce the routing.
THE BASELINE (do once, in the first 48 hours)
1. Download Bluebook; sign into your College Board account.
2. Take ONE full-length practice test — both sections, real ~2h14m, one 10-min break.
3. CONDITIONS: morning (match test day) · quiet room · phone away · timer ON, no pausing ·
on-screen Desmos only · scratch paper allowed.
4. Don't study the night before the baseline — you want a true reading, not a warmed-up one.
WHAT TO RECORD
- Total, and the two section scores (R&W /800, Math /800).
- The domain breakdown from My Practice (4 R&W domains, 4 Math domains).
- From question review: a one-line "why" for each miss → seeds the Error Log.
HOW TO READ IT (in this order)
- Section split FIRST. A 1280 that's 700 R&W / 580 Math needs the opposite plan to its mirror. (Yours likely shows R&W as the bigger opportunity — verify, don't assume.)
- Then domains — localise the bleeding (e.g., "weak Math" might be only Problem-Solving & Data).
- Limitation: the report stops at domain level. It does not isolate sub-skills or separate content gaps from careless errors. You build that layer with the Error Log on the question review.
RE-DIAGNOSIS CADENCE
- One test = baseline; two = pattern; three+ spaced = trend. Trust the trend line, not any single score (±20–30 pts of noise per sitting is normal).
- Full tests roughly every ~2–3 weeks, after focused prep — never as a substitute for prep, and only when something has actually changed since the last one.
- Ration official tests: save the newest/hardest for the final 2–3 weeks; use the Student Question Bank for daily drilling in between.
DIAGNOSE (meta)
- Re-tested with no change in score? You re-tested without prep between. Fix: prep first, then measure.
- Over-reacting to one dip? That's noise. Fix: look at the 3-test trend.
REFERENCE CARD — DIAGNOSTIC
Baseline = 1 full Bluebook adaptive test, real conditions, morning, no pausing.
Record: total · BOTH section scores · 8 domain bars · 1-line "why" per miss → Error Log.
Read: section split FIRST → domains → (sub-skill/cause via Error Log).
Re-test every ~2–3 weeks AFTER prep. Trust the trend, not one score. Ration official tests.
