Pacing & Module-1 Gate Protocol

Module 1 of each section is the highest-leverage stretch of the whole test — perform there or a hard ceiling drops on your score before Module 2 even loads. Pacing and the adaptive gate are one topic: you manage time so that Module 1 accuracy stays near-perfect, because that is what unlocks the harder Module 2 and the top score band (≈700–800 — an estimate; the College Board does not publish the cap).

#THE PACING NUMBERS

Reading & Writing: 27 questions / 32 min per module ≈ 71 sec/question  (~9 questions per 10 min)
Math:              22 questions / 35 min per module ≈ 95 sec/question  (~7 questions per 10 min)
No penalty for wrong answers → every blank gets a guess.

Grammar items often take <30 s — bank that time for Inference/Cross-Text (R&W) or multi-step modeling (Math).

#THE TWO-PASS METHOD (each module)

PASS 1 — answer everything you can in under the per-question average.
   The moment a question needs re-reading or a long computation → MARK FOR REVIEW and move on.
PASS 2 — return to marked questions with the time you banked.
   Anything still unsolved with ~30 s left → fill a guess (never blank).

Why (mechanism): one hard question eating 3–4 minutes on Pass 1 costs you several easy questions you never reach — a terrible trade, and in Module 1 it risks the ceiling. The two-pass method protects accuracy on the questions you can get. [Banking time on the front of each domain block is the structural edge — difficulty resets and re-climbs within blocks.]

#THE MODULE-1 GATE DOCTRINE

• Each section routes independently. Strong Module 1 → harder Module 2 (the only path to ~800). Errors in Module 1 are effectively unrecoverable for a top section score.
• Treat Module 1 as "must be near-perfect." Slow down exactly where others speed up — the easy/early items.
• If Module 2 feels HARDER, that's good news — it means you likely cleared Module 1 and got routed to the high-ceiling path. Expect a brutal Module 2 and welcome it.
• If Module 2 feels easy, don't spiral — by then panic helps nothing; maximise every point. Fix it next sitting by protecting Module 1.
• It is section-adaptive, not question-adaptive — a hard question early does NOT mean you're failing; flag and move on.

Why (mechanism): the score ceiling is set by which Module 2 you unlock, and that is set by Module-1 performance. So pacing discipline matters most in Module 1 — there is no "make it up later." [A single careless Module-1 miss is the most expensive error on the test.]

#TRAP TAXONOMY (pacing failures)

• Sunk-cost stall: refusing to leave a hard question. Fix: mark and move.
• Speed-on-easy: rushing Module-1 easy items and slipping. Fix: confirm the ask.
• Clock-watching panic: Fix: hide the timer until the 5-minute warning; trust the two-pass plan.
• Blank questions: Fix: never — guess every unanswered item.

#DRILLS (timed · self-marked)

Drill 1 — Two-pass section (full module, real timer): mark-and-move on anything slow; track how many you banked for Pass 2. PASS: finished the module, no blanks, ≤2 questions rushed. Drill 2 — Module-1 accuracy focus: take a Module 1 with the explicit goal of zero careless errors, even if slower. PASS: Module-1 accuracy ≥ your Module-2 accuracy (proves you protected the gate). Repetition: review pacing after every full practice test; adjust the per-question feel.

#TRANSFER

Abstract rule: spend time where it changes the score (accuracy on reachable questions; Module-1 protection), not where it feels urgent. Constant: two-pass + never-blank + protect Module 1. Changes: which questions you mark, per test.
