Vocabulary-in-Context Vault

Vocabulary is back — but it's a reasoning skill, not a memorised list

4 min read

The digital SAT rewards reading meaning from context and recognising the secondary sense of familiar words — not memorising obscure ones. Words in Context is the most frequent R&W question type, but the high-utility study is small: the method (predict from context) plus a focused set of common words used in less-common senses. Giant rote lists are low-yield.

Sources: Meltzer (vocabulary for the digital SAT); UWorld ("limit vocab study to what the test rewards"). Words below are a MERIDIAN-original curated set. Pair with the FORGE · Words-in-Context System (method).

THE APPROACH (don't memorise definitions — train the move)

  1. Predict from context first (cover the choices) — see Words-in-Context System.
  2. Expect secondary meanings. The trap is the primary meaning of a word used here in a second sense.
  3. Learn words in sentences, not as flashcard definitions — Anki cards should show a context and ask for the meaning-as-used.
  4. Don't chase rare words. The test uses mid-frequency academic words precisely; nuance beats obscurity.

ACADEMIC CONNECTOR / TONE WORDS (recognise instantly — common in correct answers)

nuanced · tentative · skeptical · ambivalent · measured · qualified · candid ·
provisional · rigorous · pragmatic · speculative · cautious · deferential ·
inconclusive · plausible · understated · contested · methodical

These describe an author's stance or a finding's status — frequent in Text-Structure/Purpose and tone questions.

ANKI GUIDANCE

  • One card per word, front = a short sentence with the word in its tested sense, back = the meaning-as-used (+ the trap primary meaning). Example front: "The report qualified its claims, noting exceptions." → back: qualified = limited/softened (NOT 'was eligible').
  • ~10–15 new cards/day in Weeks 1–3; then review-only. Stop when recognition is instant.

DRILL (self-marked · MERIDIAN-original)

Secondary-sense recall (target 18/20, ≤3 min): cover the right column above; for each word, state the tested secondary meaning. PASS: ≥18/20; misses → Anki.

TRANSFER

Abstract rule: read the sense from context; expect the second meaning; nuance over obscurity. Works on any passage. Constant: the predict-then-match move. Changes: the specific word — but this curated set covers the recurring traps.

REFERENCE CARD — VOCAB-IN-CONTEXT

Predict from context (cover choices). Expect the SECONDARY meaning of a common word.
Trap = the primary meaning. Learn words in SENTENCES (Anki: context → meaning-as-used).
Don't chase rare words — the test uses mid-frequency academic words precisely.
