HOW PREDICTIONS ARE MADE
Every prediction in this document is derived from three factors:
Factor 1 — Recency: Topics that appeared in the last 3 series are less likely to appear again immediately. Topics absent for 4+ series are overdue.
Factor 2 — Frequency ceiling: Topics that have appeared 4+ times in recent years tend to rest before returning. Supply-side has appeared so often that even it gets rests (Jun 2025 was its last appearance — it has now rested for 2+ series).
Factor 3 — Pairing logic: Q13 and Q14 tend to cover different macro areas. If Q13 is unemployment effects, Q14 is unlikely to also be unemployment. Certain pairings recur (supply-side tends to appear alongside an "effects" question).
Confidence ratings:
- 🔴 HIGH (>60% probability based on pattern data)
- 🟡 MEDIUM (35–60% probability)
- 🟢 LOWER (15–35% probability)
- ⚪ UNLIKELY (<15% — appeared very recently or saturated)
THE FULL PROBABILITY MATRIX
SUPPLY-SIDE POLICY
Appearances: 14/42 slots (33% of all essay slots) Last appearance: Jun 2025 (Q13 — supply-side + employment) Consecutive appearances before that: Jan 2025 Q13 (same question) Gap since: 2+ series
Prediction: 🟡 MEDIUM
Supply-side is the most tested topic but has just completed two identical consecutive appearances. Pearson typically rests a topic after two consecutive showings. However, supply-side has returned after 2-series rests before (e.g. it appeared in Jan/Oct 2021, then returned Jan 2022).
If supply-side returns: Most likely framing is supply-side + productivity OR supply-side + growth — the two sub-types that haven't appeared since Jun 2023 and Jan/Oct 2020 respectively.
Least likely framing: Supply-side + employment (just appeared twice).
Preparation priority: HIGH regardless of probability — too frequent and too important to ignore. Prepare the productivity and growth variants specifically.
MONETARY POLICY + INFLATION CONTROL
Appearances: 3 times — Oct 2023 (Q14 deflation causes), Jan 2024 (Q13 interest rates), Jan 2026 (Q14 monetary policy + inflation) Pattern: Has appeared in 3 of last 8 series — trending upward Last appearance: Jan 2026 (Q14) Gap since: 1 series
Prediction: 🟡 MEDIUM
Monetary policy questions have accelerated — appearing in Oct 2023, Jan 2024, and Jan 2026. The 1-series gap since Jan 2026 makes an immediate return unlikely, but the 2-series gap in Jun/Oct 2026 window is realistic.
Most likely framing: Effects of interest rate changes on macroeconomy OR monetary policy effectiveness in controlling inflation. Both have appeared; the next variant might focus on limitations (e.g. zero lower bound, QE effectiveness).
Preparation priority: HIGH — this is the second most likely topic for the next sitting after supply-side.
MACROECONOMIC OBJECTIVE CONFLICTS
Appearances: 8 times — appearing in at least one question in most series from 2020 onward Last appearance: Jan 2026A Q14 (growth vs two other objectives) + Oct 2025 Q13 (growth must always conflict) Gap since: 0 series (appeared in the most recent series)
Prediction: ⚪ UNLIKELY (immediately)
Just appeared in both Jan 2026 sittings. Unlikely to appear again in the very next series. However, the framing rotates: growth vs environment (Oct 2025, Jan 2026A), growth vs inflation/unemployment (Oct 2025A). A new framing (e.g. fiscal policy creating conflicts) could return sooner.
When it returns: Most likely framing is fiscal policy + multiple objective conflicts — this version hasn't appeared since Jun 2024 Q14.
Preparation priority: MEDIUM — prepare the conflicts content as evaluation material even if not the main essay. Conflicts appear everywhere as evaluation moves.
RECESSION COSTS / EFFECTS
Appearances: 4 times — Jun 2023 Q14, Oct 2024 Q14, Jan 2026 Q13 Last appearance: Jan 2026 Q13 Pattern: Has appeared 3 times in the last 4 series — clearly trending
Prediction: 🟡 MEDIUM (for the next 2–3 series)
The Jan 2026 appearance makes an immediate repeat unlikely, but recession is clearly in a high-frequency cycle. The question framing has varied: costs (Jun 2023), effects (Oct 2024), disadvantages (Jan 2026). Each variant is treated as a fresh question.
If it returns: Most likely as "evaluate the likely effects of a recession on living standards" or "evaluate whether a recession always leads to a deterioration in economic welfare" — both framings not yet used.
Preparation priority: HIGH — appears too frequently to ignore. Prepare recession content fully.
UNEMPLOYMENT EFFECTS / COSTS
Appearances: Oct 2024 Q13, Jan 2026A Q13 — both recent Last appearance: Jan 2026A Q13 Gap since: 0 series
Prediction: ⚪ UNLIKELY (immediately)
Just appeared. The "workers and public finances" framing has now appeared twice (Oct 2024 and Jan 2026A). Very unlikely immediately.
However: Unemployment causes (Oct 2025 Q14) is a different sub-type and has also appeared recently.
Preparation priority: MEDIUM — prepare the content for use as supporting material. Don't ignore it but don't prioritise over supply-side or monetary policy.
INFLATION COSTS
Appearances: Oct 2022 Q13 Last appearance: Oct 2022 Gap since: 4+ series
Prediction: 🔴 HIGH
Inflation costs have not appeared since October 2022. Given 4 series have passed, this is statistically overdue. The topic is highly examinable, appears in the spec prominently, and aligns with recent global economic events (UK 11.1% CPI peak 2022, post-pandemic inflation cycle still discussed in extracts).
Most likely framing: "Evaluate the likely costs of a high rate of inflation on a named economy" — the same framing used in Oct 2022 and Jun 2022, or a newer framing: "Evaluate whether inflation is always harmful."
Preparation priority: VERY HIGH — this is the highest-probability individual topic that is genuinely underrepresented in recent preparation materials.
FISCAL POLICY + OBJECTIVES
Appearances: Jan 2020, Oct 2020, Jun 2024 Last appearance: Jun 2024 Q14 (deflationary fiscal policy + balanced budget) Gap since: 3 series
Prediction: 🔴 HIGH
Fiscal policy returns every 4–6 series. The Jun 2024 variant was deflationary fiscal (contractionary). The earlier variants were general fiscal + conflicts. A new framing — expansionary fiscal policy effects, fiscal multiplier, or crowding out specifically — has not appeared for 5+ series.
Most likely framing: "Evaluate the likely macroeconomic effects of expansionary fiscal policy" OR "Evaluate the view that fiscal policy is always effective in achieving macroeconomic objectives."
Preparation priority: VERY HIGH — due for return. The expansionary fiscal variant is the most likely newcomer.
SUPPLY-SIDE + PRODUCTIVITY (SPECIFIC)
Appearances: Oct 2021 Q14, Jan 2022 Q14, Oct 2022 Q14, Jun 2023 Q13 Last appearance: Jun 2023 Gap since: 5 series
Prediction: 🔴 HIGH
The productivity sub-variant of supply-side was very frequent 2021–2023 then disappeared. Five series have now passed without it. Given overall supply-side frequency, the productivity framing is the most likely supply-side variant to return.
Most likely framing: "Evaluate supply-side policies that could be used to increase a country's productivity. Refer to a country of your choice." (The Jun 2023 / Oct 2022 / Jan 2022 exact framing reused, or slight variation.)
Preparation priority: VERY HIGH — effectively a "return favourite."
GDP / LIVING STANDARDS MEASUREMENT
Appearances: Jan 2025 Q14, Jun 2025 Q14 (identical) Last appearance: Jun 2025 Gap since: 1 series (+ the repeat means it's essentially been used up)
Prediction: ⚪ UNLIKELY
Two consecutive identical appearances. This question is exhausted for the near term.
Preparation priority: LOW — but the content appears as evaluation material in growth and development questions.
DEFLATION CAUSES
Appearances: Oct 2023 Q14 (Rwanda −3.4%) Last appearance: Oct 2023 Gap since: 4+ series
Prediction: 🟡 MEDIUM
Appeared once, hasn't returned. Not frequent enough to rate as high probability, but 4 series without it makes it viable. Given global interest rate environment now shifting lower, deflation risk is economically current.
Preparation priority: MEDIUM — prepare as part of inflation/monetary policy preparation.
PHILLIPS CURVE / INFLATION-UNEMPLOYMENT CONFLICT
Appearances: Oct 2025A Q14 (first standalone appearance) Last appearance: Oct 2025A Gap since: 1 series
Prediction: 🟡 MEDIUM (medium-term)
This appeared for the first time as a standalone essay topic in Oct 2025A. The Phillips curve conflict has been used as evaluation content for years but never as the essay question until now. Its first appearance suggests Pearson is comfortable with it as a standalone topic.
Preparation priority: MEDIUM — this could return as early as Jun/Oct 2026. Prepare the short-run vs long-run Phillips curve fully.

THE THREE TOPICS TO PREPARE FIRST
Based on the full pattern analysis, if you prepare only three essay topics, prepare these:
PRIORITY 1 — INFLATION COSTS Most overdue high-frequency topic. 4+ series without it. Appears as both Q13 and Q14 historically. Easy to prepare with strong UK (CPI 11.1%, Oct 2022) and USA (CPI 9.1%, Jun 2022) data.
PRIORITY 2 — SUPPLY-SIDE + PRODUCTIVITY 5 series without the productivity variant. Supply-side never disappears for long. The productivity framing has appeared 4 times since 2021 — it will return.
PRIORITY 3 — FISCAL POLICY EFFECTS (EXPANSIONARY) The expansionary variant (multiplier, AD stimulus, growth effects) has not appeared since Jan/Oct 2020. The Jun 2024 contractionary version has been done. Expansionary is overdue.
These three topics, fully prepared, cover the three highest-probability essay questions for the next 2–3 sittings. Each also generates evaluation moves usable on almost any other essay topic.
