Diagnostic Framework — Requires Real Practice Paper Input

Not affiliated with or endorsed by Pearson Edexcel.

HOW TO USE THIS

Complete a full WEC12 practice paper under timed conditions (105 minutes). Use this framework to diagnose where marks are being lost and in what order to prioritise fixes. Do NOT use this without a real scored practice paper — the scores require actual examiner feedback or self-marking against the mark scheme.

STEP 1 — SCORE YOUR PAPER

STEP 2 — IDENTIFY YOUR FAILURE PATTERN

For each section where you lost 2+ marks, identify the cause from this list:

SECTION B FAILURE PATTERNS

PatternWhat it looks likeFix document
Draw: wrong axis labels"Price" not "Price level" / "Output" not "Real output"F9, N13
Draw: missing dotted linesEquilibrium point only, no lines to axesF9, N13
Draw: written text alongside diagramText present on a Draw questionF11
Explain: chain-shortFour sentences but Stage 4 missingF2, N11
Explain: data standaloneExtract figure quoted separately not embeddedN10, N5
Calculate: no working shownOnly final answer, no formula/stepsF11

SECTION C Q12a FAILURE PATTERNS

PatternFix
1/2: qualifier missing (circular/informal)F1, T3-26
1/2: causes added (irrelevant)F1
0/2: completely wrong termT3-26

SECTION C Q12c/d FAILURE PATTERNS

PatternMark impactFix
Chain-short (Stage 3 endpoint)−1 to −2 marksN11, F2, F3
Data standalone (not embedded)−1 mark per chainN10
Evaluation on 6-mark0 marks + time wastedN5, F2
Solutions on 8-mark0 AO4 marksN5, F3
Only one chainLevel 1 KAAF2, F3

SECTION C Q12e + SECTION D FAILURE PATTERNS

This is where the biggest mark gaps are for most students.

PatternMark impactFix document
Unconditional conclusionLevel 2 eval cap (−2 to −3 eval marks)N6, N12
P2 missing (bilateral development)Level 3 KAA ceiling + 1–2 eval marksR2, N6
Chain-short on both chainsLevel 2 KAA (−3 to −6 KAA marks)N11, N6
Own-country data absentContext ceiling Level 3/2 maxN10, R6
Data bolted on (not embedded)Partial AO2 credit onlyN10, N5
Judgement restates bodyLevel 3 mid not top (−1 eval mark)N12, N3
Evaluation at end (not after each chain)Level 2 eval structureR1, R2
Same mechanism on both chainsBilateral test fails = Level 2R1, F7
Generic evaluation ("time lag" alone)Level 1 eval (−3 to −4 eval marks)N2, N12
Unconditional evaluation sentencesLevel 2 eval maximumN5, N12

STEP 3 — PRIORITISE YOUR FIXES

Rank your failure patterns by mark impact (largest gap first). Use the fix documents in this order:

HIGHEST MARK IMPACT (fix first):

  1. Unconditional conclusion → N12 drill, then N6 threshold guide
  2. P2 missing → R2 Part 5 (four-paragraph structure) and worked P2 example
  3. Chain-short → N11 chain completion drill (25 seconds per chain)
  4. Own-country data missing → R6 application bank, N10 training manual

MEDIUM IMPACT: 5. Data bolted on → N10 five-step embedding process 6. Evaluation at end not after chain → R1 Part 4 placement rule 7. Generic evaluation → N2 definitive evaluations guide

LOWER IMPACT: 8. Axis labels → N13 diagram drill (memorise once) 9. Definition qualifier → T3-26 definition masterlist

STEP 4 — TARGET MARKS

Grade boundary (estimate)Total marks
A*64+ /80
A56–63 /80
B48–55 /80
C40–47 /80

To move from current to target:

Most mark gains come from two habits: adding Stage 4 to chains (25 seconds each, +1–2 marks per chain) and adding "only if [condition]" to conclusions (20 seconds, +1–2 marks per conclusion). These two habits alone typically add 4–8 marks to a full paper.
