HOW MCQs ARE SET

WEC12 MCQs test AO1 knowledge and AO2 application. They are NOT computational (the calculator-based calculations are in Section B). Each MCQ has four options — one correct, three plausible distractors designed around common misconceptions.

Strategy: Read all four options before answering. Eliminate wrong options. Never commit to A after reading only A.

THE MOST TESTED MCQ TOPICS

Based on WEC12 papers 2019–2026:

TopicFrequencyKey knowledge tested
AD/AS shiftsVery highWhich direction; what causes which shift
Multiplier calculationHighk = 1/(1−MPC) or 1/MPW
Definitions (GDP, inflation, unemployment)HighPrecise definitions
Price level effectsHighMoving along vs shifting curves
Phillips curveMediumSRPC trade-off; LRPC at NAIRU
Current accountMediumDeficit/surplus; J-curve
GDP calculationsHigh% change; GDP per capita
Exchange rate effectsMediumAppreciation → exports/imports
Objectives conflictsMediumWhich conflict between which objectives
Output gapMediumPositive vs negative; implications

THE MOST COMMON WRONG ANSWER PATTERNS

Wrong answer type 1 — Direction reversal: Question asks what INCREASES unemployment. Wrong option states something that DECREASES unemployment. Students misread direction under time pressure. Fix: Circle the direction word in the question before looking at options.

Wrong answer type 2 — Confusing shifts vs movements: A change in the price level causes a MOVEMENT along AD (not a shift). A change in income causes a SHIFT of the AD curve. Fix: Price level changes → movement along. Everything else → shift of.

Wrong answer type 3 — LRAS vs SRAS confusion: Supply-side policies shift LRAS. Short-run cost changes shift SRAS. Fix: Long run = LRAS (permanent structural changes). Short run = SRAS (cost/productivity changes).

Wrong answer type 4 — Multiplier formula error: Students use k = MPC/(1−MPC) instead of k = 1/(1−MPC). The multiplier is 1 divided by MPW (marginal propensity to withdraw). If MPC = 0.6: MPW = 0.4, k = 1/0.4 = 2.5. NOT 0.6/0.4 = 1.5.

Wrong answer type 5 — Nominal vs real confusion: Nominal GDP includes inflation. Real GDP adjusts for it. If nominal GDP rises but prices rose more → real GDP may have fallen.

KEY FORMULAS FOR MCQ SECTION

Multiplier: k = 1/(1−MPC) = 1/MPW
% change: [(new − old)/old] × 100
GDP per capita: GDP ÷ population
Real GDP: Nominal GDP ÷ price index × 100
Percentage points: direct subtraction (4.2% − 3.6% = 0.6pp)

COMMON MCQ DEFINTION TRAPS

Term students confuseCorrect distinction
Disinflation vs deflationDisinflation = rate falling (still positive). Deflation = price level falling (negative CPI).
Real vs nominalReal = inflation-adjusted. Nominal = current prices.
GDP vs GNPGDP = within borders. GNP = by residents (includes overseas).
Movement vs shiftPrice level changes → movement along AD/AS. Other factors → shift.
Cyclical vs structural unemploymentCyclical = demand-deficient. Structural = skills mismatch.
Current account deficit vs surplusDeficit = payments > receipts. Surplus = receipts > payments.
