The bet you are making
DUOX is not the upgrade. It is the other side of a trade.

The natural assumption is that Brut is the beginner program and DUOX is what you graduate to.
That is not the relationship. They answer different questions about what is scarce.
| Brut | DUOX | |
|---|---|---|
| Assumes the constraint is | Adherence | Recovery capacity |
| Sessions | 4 × 50 min | 6 × 60–75 min |
| Weekly sets per muscle | 6–8 | 12–18 |
| Frequency per muscle | 2× | 3× |
| Block length | 8–12 weeks | 16 weeks, periodised |
| Failure mode | Leaves ceiling unclaimed | Collapses entirely on a bad month |
| Right for | Almost everyone, almost always | A season with genuine slack in it |
The arithmetic that should decide it
A maximal program run at 60% adherence loses to a minimal one run at 95%, because growth is dose-over-time and a missed session is a permanent zero.
DUOX only wins if you will genuinely run it at 90%+ for sixteen weeks. Not "intend to." Run it.
Most people running a six-day program are running a four-day program badly and paying for the privilege in joint health and sleep debt.
The prerequisites, and they are not negotiable
Sleep 8 hours, consistently. Not "usually." The volume here is only absorbable if recovery is actually happening, and sleep is where it happens. If your sleep is a mess, fix that first and run Brut meanwhile — you will grow more.
Eat in a surplus. DUOX in a deficit is a way to get injured and lose muscle at the same time. If you are cutting, run Brut.
Two years of consistent training. Not because novices cannot handle volume, but because they do not need it — they grow on almost anything, and starting at the ceiling leaves nowhere to progress.
No current injury. Six days a week does not forgive a shoulder you are managing.
Genuine time. Six sessions plus warm-ups plus the food is 10–12 hours a week before travel.
The honest counterweight
The largest dose-response meta-regression to date (Pelland et al., Sports Medicine, 2026 — 67 studies, 2,058 participants) found volume raises hypertrophy with 100% posterior probability of a positive slope, showing diminishing returns.
Diminishing, not absent. Doubling weekly volume does not double growth — it buys a smaller increment at a substantially higher recovery and time cost.
That is the trade. It is real, it is worth taking for a defined season if you have the slack, and it is not worth taking permanently.
If you are under about 20
Read this honestly: the marginal returns of a six-day program over a four-day one, at your age with your recovery, are smaller than the returns from sleeping properly and eating enough for another two years.
The ceiling is not the problem at 17. Consistency over a decade is.
The condensed, referenceable version of everything above — the arithmetic, the in/out list, the specialisation mechanism, and the recovery signals — lives at The DUOX Protocol, part of the protocol.
