What maximal actually means here

Not every technique that exists — every technique that clears the bar.

A maximal program is not "everything." It is everything that survives scrutiny, run at the top of its useful range.

That distinction removes a lot of what commercial programs pad with.

What is in, and why

Higher frequency — 3× per muscle. The per-session ceiling is around five hard sets. Three exposures means 12–15 quality sets weekly, all delivered in a recovered state, rather than 15 sets in one session where the last eight are performed by a fatigued nervous system.

Higher volume — 12–18 sets per muscle weekly. Approaching the top of the dose-response curve, where returns are diminishing but still positive.

Block periodisation. Accumulation → intensification → realisation → deload, repeated. The volume that drives growth is not the volume you can sustain indefinitely, which is the entire argument for structuring it in blocks.

Specialisation phases. One muscle group pushed to 20+ weekly sets while everything else drops to maintenance. This is the "X" in DUOX and it is the highest-value thing in the program.

Full exercise rotation on a fixed schedule, so resistance profiles vary while the log stays readable.

What is deliberately out, even at maximum

Drop sets, rest-pause, myoreps as staples. They increase perceived difficulty and total reps. What they do not do is increase stimulating reps proportionally — after the first bout to failure, the same recruitment and fatigue limits apply, so subsequent mini-sets deliver progressively fewer high-quality reps at rising fatigue cost. They are time-efficient and recovery-inefficient. Used here only in the final week of an accumulation block, where the fatigue is about to be cleared anyway.

Deliberate slow eccentrics. Eccentrics produce more whole-muscle force but the nervous system reduces recruitment during lengthening — fewer active fibres, so high external force and low per-fibre stimulus, with disproportionate soreness. Not a maximisation tool.

Training every session to absolute failure. Failure on set one makes sets two through four measurably worse. Prescribed per-set here, deliberately.

Two-a-days as a default. Available as an option in the specialisation block, where the second session is small and targeted. Not the standard structure, because for most people it converts stimulus into accumulated fatigue.

Anything pharmacological. Not on this site, at any budget, and especially not for anyone still developing.

The principle

A maximal program is not "every technique that exists" — it is every technique that clears the bar, and the bar does not move because you have more time.

Roughly two-thirds of what gets sold as advanced training fails that test.
