The macro shape
| Weeks | Block | Volume | Intensity | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | Accumulation | Rises 12 → 18 sets | 2–1 RIR | Build work capacity and the bulk of the growth |
| 6 | Deload | Halved | 3–4 RIR | Clear fatigue, express fitness |
| 7–11 | Intensification | Holds 14–16 | 1–0 RIR | Heavier loads, closer to failure |
| 12 | Deload | Halved | 3–4 RIR | — |
| 13–15 | Specialisation | 20+ on one muscle, maintenance elsewhere | 1–0 RIR | The X |
| 16 | Realisation | Low volume, heavy singles/triples | Fresh | Test, and see what the block built |
Why this shape
Volume drives growth; fatigue accumulates alongside it. The volume that produces the most growth is not the volume you can sustain indefinitely, which is precisely why it has to be structured in blocks with planned clearances.
Accumulation ramps rather than starting at the top. Beginning a block at 18 sets means arriving at week five already buried. Starting at 12 and adding a set per muscle per week means the hardest week lands when your work capacity is highest.
Intensification holds volume and adds load. Once work capacity is built, the lever moves to intensity. Same sets, heavier, closer to failure.
Specialisation is where the real gain is. Three weeks of 20+ sets on one muscle group, everything else at maintenance, produces more change in that muscle than sixteen weeks of even distribution would. This is the highest-value block and the reason to run DUOX at all.
Realisation exists to measure. One week of low-volume heavy work with fatigue cleared, so you find out what the block actually built rather than guessing.
Maintenance is cheaper than you think
The specialisation block only works because holding a muscle takes roughly a third of the volume that built it. Drop everything except your target to 4–6 weekly sets and it will not shrink over three weeks.
That is the mechanism that makes specialisation affordable, and most people never use it because it feels like neglect.
Do not stack blocks without the deloads
The deload weeks are not optional rest you have earned. They are what makes the following block possible. Skipping them means week 11 is performed by someone carrying five weeks of unclearedated fatigue, and the volume stops being stimulus and starts being damage.
