HOW TO USE THIS CHECKLIST

Run every question through its checklist immediately after writing it — before moving on. Every unchecked box is a specific, named mark loss. The consequence column tells you exactly what each failure costs.

For exam-day use: the rapid version (Part 8) fits on one side of A4. Print it.

SECTION A — MCQ (6 marks, 6 minutes)

  • Read all four options before selecting — never commit to A after reading A alone
  • If uncertain: eliminate obviously wrong options first, then choose from remainder
  • Never spend more than 60 seconds on any single MCQ — move on and return
  • Never leave blank — guess from remaining options if needed (no negative marking)

SECTION B — 4-MARK QUESTIONS (Q7–Q11)

Apply to every Section B question. Identify the question type first.

TYPE: EXPLAIN

CheckIf fails → consequence
Sentence 1: Economic mechanism with precise terminology?AO1 mark lost — no concept demonstrated
Sentence 2: Specific extract figure embedded in argument?AO2 mark lost — stays at 3/4 maximum
Sentence 3: First-order consequence with signal word?An1 mark lost
Sentence 4: Macroeconomic outcome named? (real GDP / unemployment / inflation / current account)An2 mark lost — stays at 3/4
Stopped at four sentences? If not: zero additional marks + 30 seconds wasted from next question
No evaluation written?Evaluation on 4-mark = zero marks + time stolen

TYPE: DRAW

CheckIf fails → consequence
Y-axis labelled "Price level" (exact wording)?K mark lost — "Price" or "Prices" earns zero
X-axis labelled "Real output" or "Real GDP" (exact)?K mark lost — "Output" or "Quantity" earns zero
Curves correctly labelled (AD, SRAS, LRAS)?K mark at risk
Shift shown with arrow in correct direction?App mark lost
Original equilibrium (P₁, Y₁) with dotted lines to BOTH axes?App mark lost — dotted lines to one axis only = zero
New equilibrium (P₂, Y₂) with dotted lines to BOTH axes?App mark lost — same rule
Zero written text alongside diagram?Text earns zero — confirmed every series. Time wasted

TYPE: CALCULATE

CheckIf fails → consequence
Formula stated or clearly implied?K mark lost
Correct figures from extract inserted?App mark at risk
Working shown step by step?App marks lost even if final answer correct. OWN-FIGURE RULE: correct method with wrong figures still earns partial credit only if working shown
Final answer with correct units stated?App mark lost — numerical answer without units scores partial

SECTION C — DATA RESPONSE (Q12a–Q12e)

Q12a — DEFINE (2 marks)

CheckIf fails → consequence
Mark 1: Core concept stated with precise economic vocabulary?Mark 1 lost — "going down" not equivalent to "negative real GDP growth"
Mark 2: Qualifying component present — what makes this term specifically this term?Mark 2 lost — stays at 1/2
Both components genuinely distinct (not same idea twice)?Circular definition = Mark 2 zero
Circular definition avoided (term not used to define itself)?Mark 2 zero — "real GDP is GDP in real terms" earns nothing for qualifier
Two sentences only — hard stop?Third sentence earns zero + 20 seconds wasted
No causes, examples, or context added? These earn zero — zero on a 2-mark question

Q12b — EXPLAIN (4 marks, Section C)

Same checklist as Section B Explain PLUS:

CheckIf fails → consequence
If question asks to "explain the difference between X and Y": two data points embedded — one for X, one for Y?One data point = 1/2 App marks — confirmed Jan 2022

Q12c or Q12d — ANALYSE (6 marks)

CheckIf fails → consequence
Chain 1: Economic mechanism with precise terminology?K1 mark lost
Chain 1: Specific extract figure embedded in chain (not in standalone sentence)?App1 mark lost — stays at 5/6 maximum
Chain 1: Chain reaches named macroeconomic outcome?An1 mark lost — chain-short = Level 2
Chain 2: Same three checks — K, App, An?Each miss = 1 mark lost
Chain 2 uses DIFFERENT extract figure from Chain 1?Same data used twice = App2 at risk
Chain 2 is DIFFERENT mechanism from Chain 1?Same mechanism = only 1 K mark total
Zero evaluation written anywhere?Evaluation on 6-mark = zero + 90 seconds wasted. Confirmed Oct 2021
Hard stop after two chains?Third chain = zero marks + time stolen from Q12e

Q12c or Q12d — EXAMINE (8 marks)

All Analyse checks PLUS:

CheckIf fails → consequence
Evaluation sentence 1 present? (mechanism of limitation — REDUCES confidence in KAA)Ev1 mark lost — stays at 7/8 maximum
Evaluation is NOT a solution or policy recommendation?Solutions = zero AO4 — confirmed Jun 2022 verbatim
Evaluation sentence 2: explicit condition stated? ("only if / unless / provided that")Ev2 mark lost — stays at 7/8
Evaluation is exactly 2 sentences — stopped?More evaluation = zero additional marks + time stolen from Q12e

Q12e — DISCUSS (14 marks)

CheckIf fails → consequence
KAA Chain 1: K, App (extract data embedded), An (macro outcome named)? Each miss = marks lost in KAA band
KAA Chain 2: Same three checks — genuinely DIFFERENT mechanism?Same mechanism twice = one K mark, not two
Bilateral requirement met: two chains that COMPETE not support each other? Both chains supporting same direction = Level 2 KAA ceiling
Extract data embedded in BOTH chains (not just introduction)?Context ceiling: no data = Level 2 KAA maximum
Evaluation 1 immediately follows KAA Chain 1? (not saved for end)Evaluation at end only = reads as generic = Level 1 eval risk
Evaluation 1: specific mechanism + condition stated?Generic evaluation = Level 1 (1–2/6 eval)
Evaluation 2 immediately follows KAA Chain 2?Same placement rule — must follow its chain
Conditional judgement present? No judgement = Level 2 eval maximum = 4/6 eval max
"Only if" or "provided that" in the judgement?Unconditional conclusion = Level 2 eval max — confirmed every series
No unconditional conclusion anywhere?ONE unconditional sentence anywhere caps eval at 4/6
Word count: 250–300 words?Over-writing steals time from Section D
Time: 16 minutes maximum?Every minute over costs more in Section D than it gains here

SECTION D — ESSAY (Q13 or Q14, 20 marks)

QUESTION SELECTION (60 seconds before writing)

CheckIf fails → consequence
Test 1: Can I name TWO genuinely distinct mechanisms?Fail = both chains same direction = Level 2 KAA
Test 2: Do I have own-country data with specific figure + year?Fail = Level 3 KAA maximum = max 9/12 KAA = max 15/20
Test 3: Can I write the "only if" sentence for this topic from memory?Fail = judgement will be generic under pressure
If one question fails ANY test: choose the otherOver-confidence in familiar topic without data is Level 3, not 4

KAA (12 marks)

CheckIf fails → consequence
Chain 1: K, App (extract/own-country data embedded), An (macro outcome)? Each = 1+ marks lost in KAA band
Chain 2: K, App (DIFFERENT data), An (DIFFERENT macro outcome)?Same mechanism/data = Level 3 KAA ceiling
Both chains reach 4–5 stages (not just 2-stage "A causes B")?2-stage chains = Level 2 KAA regardless of how many
Own-country data: specific country + specific figure + specific year?Country name alone = zero App — confirmed Jan 2024
Own-country data embedded in the chain, not in introduction only?Front-loaded data = Level 3 KAA ceiling
Both chains at L4 standard SIMULTANEOUSLY?One strong + one weak = Level 3, not Level 4
Bilateral requirement: chains genuinely compete, not support?Mutual-support chains = Level 2 KAA

EVALUATION (8 marks)

CheckIf fails → consequence
P2 present: evaluates YOUR OWN KAA Chain 1 (before presenting Chain 2)?Absent = bilateral development missing = Level 3 KAA max
P2: REDUCES confidence in Chain 1 (not adds to it)?Agreement = analysis not evaluation = zero AO4
P2: mechanism of limitation + explicit condition?Incomplete = Level 2 eval
P4: evaluates KAA Chain 2 — different evaluation move from P2?Same eval move = Level 2 eval
Conditional judgement present?Absent = Level 2 eval maximum = max 6/8
Judgement: decision in question's exact terms?Wrong question answered = Level 2
Judgement: condition stated ("only if")?Unconditional = Level 2 eval maximum — confirmed every series
Judgement: counter-condition stated?Missing = Level 3 mid not top = lose 1 eval mark
No unconditional conclusion anywhere?ONE unconditional sentence caps eval at 6/8

TIMING

CheckIf fails → consequence
Section D entered with at least 25 minutes remaining?Less = essay incomplete = marks left on table
Essay completed within 28 minutes?Over-run = no time buffer for conditional judgement
If running behind: conditional judgement written FIRST?Missing judgement costs more than missing body content

PART 9: ERROR LOG — TRACK YOUR PATTERNS

After each practice paper, record errors by type. If any error appears 3+ times: it is a pattern, not a slip. Treat it as a knowledge gap.

Error typeTallyAO affectedFix
Chain-short (stopped at Stage 3)AO3Add one sentence: "meaning [economy] faces [macro outcome]"
Extract-standalone (data not embedded)AO2Rewrite so data is inside a causal sentence
Unconditional conclusionAO4Add "only if [condition]" — 20 seconds
Evaluation on 6-markTime onlyHard stop rule — no "however" on 6-mark
Generic evaluation ("time lag" alone)AO4Add mechanism + condition after the phrase
Two chains = same mechanismAO3Check: do both chains end at the same macro outcome via the same pathway?
Country name only (no figure/year)AO2Add: "where [variable] was [figure] in [year]"
P2 missing (bilateral development)AO3/4Write P2 before P3. It evaluates P1, not P3.
Draw: wrong axis labelAO1Memorise: "Price level" / "Real output" — no variations
Restatement conclusionAO4Ask: "What have I NOT yet said?" — write that

PART 10: WRONG ANSWER EXAMPLES — DIAGNOSE AGAINST THESE

Each example below shows a student response that FAILS a specific checklist item. Identify the failed check. Identify the fix.

WRONG 1 — Chain-short (Sentence 4 missing): "A rise in interest rates makes borrowing more expensive. With India's base rate at 4.9%, firms face higher financing costs. Investment (I) therefore falls as a component of AD, shifting AD leftward."

Failed check: Sentence 4 — macroeconomic outcome not named. "AD shifts leftward" = Stage 3. Fix: "...reducing India's real output below the ADB's 6.7% growth forecast and raising cyclical unemployment as firms cut hiring in response to falling demand." Mark change: 3/4 → 4/4.

WRONG 2 — Extract-standalone (data floats, not embedded): "A rise in the base rate makes borrowing more expensive for households. Egypt's base rate rose to 27.25%. Consumer spending falls. Aggregate demand shifts leftward, reducing real output."

Failed check: Sentence 2 — extract data stated as standalone fact, not embedded in mechanism. Fix: "With Egypt's base rate rising to 27.25% — in a context of severe inflationary pressure — the monthly cost of variable-rate consumer credit rose substantially, compressing household disposable income available for discretionary spending." Mark change: 3/4 → 4/4.

WRONG 3 — Evaluation on 6-mark: "One cost of unemployment is the loss of income for affected workers. India's informal sector comprises ~90% of the workforce. This reduces consumer spending. However, this can be mitigated through government retraining programmes."

Failed check: "However, this can be mitigated..." = evaluation on a 6-mark Analyse question = zero AO4. Steals 30 seconds. Fix: Delete the "However" sentence entirely. Stop after the Stage 4 consequence. Mark change: No mark gain — the evaluation earns zero — but 30 seconds recovered for Q12e.

WRONG 4 — Unconditional conclusion: "Overall, monetary policy is the most effective way to control inflation because it directly targets the cause and has been successfully used in the UK."

Failed check: No "only if" condition. Unconditional conclusion = Level 2 eval maximum on every question. Fix: "Overall, monetary policy is the most effective primary instrument only if inflation is predominantly demand-pull in origin — confirmed by the UK's tight labour market (3.5% unemployment) at the 11.1% CPI peak, confirming demand-pull pressures were present alongside supply-side shocks." Mark change: Level 2 eval cap removed → Level 3 eval accessible.

WRONG 5 — Country name only (no data): "In the UK, supply-side policies have been used to improve productivity. This shifted LRAS rightward, raising full employment output."

Failed check: Own-country application = zero without figure + year. "In the UK" alone earns no AO2. Fix: "In the UK, where labour productivity growth averaged below 1% per year in the decade following 2008 — substantially below pre-crisis trends — supply-side investment in vocational training and infrastructure targeted the productivity gap directly, shifting LRAS rightward." Mark change: Context ceiling lifted → Level 4 KAA accessible.
