#THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT RULE ON THIS PAPER

║  This is confirmed in every WEC12 examiner report        ║
║  from 2019 to 2026 without exception:                    ║
║                                                          ║
║  "It appears that most candidates were not actually      ║
║   able to complete the paper in the time available."     ║
║                                                          ║
║  Marks lost to time are the highest-cost error on        ║
║  this paper. A student who completes the paper with      ║
║  thin arguments outscores a student who writes one       ║
║  brilliant section and leaves two questions unfinished.  ║

Time management is not a soft skill. It is a mark-earning strategy. Every minute allocated correctly earns marks. Every minute over-allocated in one place is a minute stolen from a higher-value question elsewhere.

#THE MASTER TIMETABLE

Total time: 1 hour 45 minutes (105 minutes)

Marks per minute:

• Section A: 1.0 mark/min
• Section B: 0.8 mark/min
• Section C: 0.7 mark/min
• Section D: 0.8 mark/min

All sections are approximately equal value per minute. No section deserves more time at the expense of another.

#YOUR CHECKPOINT SCHEDULE

Memorise these. Check your watch at each.

If you reach a checkpoint and you are behind: stop the current question immediately and move to the next. Do not finish your sentence. Do not add one more point. Stop.

This feels wrong. It always feels wrong. Stop anyway. The uncompleted sentence loses nothing. The next question's unstarted marks cost everything.

#THE FOUR HARDEST STOPS

These are the four moments where stopping feels most counter-intuitive — and where failing to stop costs the most marks. Practise these until stopping is automatic.

║  You are in the middle of your second chain and it is    ║
║  coming together beautifully. You have 45 seconds to     ║
║  finish the paragraph. It feels wrong to stop.           ║

║  STOP ANYWAY. Q12e is worth 14 marks. Every minute       ║
║  you stay in Q12c/d steals from Q12e. A half-developed   ║
║  Q12e scores more than a perfect Q12c with no Q12e.      ║

║  HARDEST STOP 2 — Q12e at 17 minutes                     ║
║                                                          ║
║  You haven't written the conditional judgement yet.      ║
║  You could finish it in 90 seconds. But Section D        ║
║  starts in 0 minutes and Section D is 20 marks.          ║

║  Write the conditional judgement in the next 60 seconds  ║
║  — THEN move to Section D. The judgement is worth        ║
║  2 marks. A started Section D earns more than 2 marks.   ║
║  Write the judgement. Move immediately.                  ║

║  You are in the middle of a strong KAA chain. You can    ║
║  feel the argument building. 25 minutes is up.           ║

║  chain mid-sentence and write the judgement. RIGHT NOW.  ║
║  An incomplete chain loses nothing that isn't already    ║
║  lost. A missing judgement costs 2 eval marks minimum.   ║

║  Two chains on Q12c = 6 marks = STOP. Any additional    ║
║  sentence earns zero and costs 30 seconds.               ║

#PER-QUESTION TIME LIMITS

Q1–Q6 MCQ — 1 minute each If a question takes more than 60 seconds: mark your best guess, circle the question number, and return in the buffer minute. Never spend 3 minutes on one MCQ. The mark value is identical to one you can answer in 10 seconds.

Q7–Q11 Section B — 5 minutes each One point, developed fully. Four sentences for Explain. Stop. Never over-develop a 4-mark question.

Q12a Define — 3 minutes Two sentences. Stop. This is the most over-written question on the paper relative to its mark value.

Q12b Explain/Draw — 5 minutes Four sentences or five diagram elements. Stop. Never explain a Draw diagram in writing.

Q12c (8 or 6 marks) — 10 or 8 minutes Check the mark allocation before starting. The position of the 8-mark and 6-mark rotates between series. 10 minutes for 8-mark, 8 minutes for 6-mark. Hard stop regardless of completion.

Q12d (6 or 8 marks) — 8 or 10 minutes Same rule. Read the mark allocation.

Q12e Discuss — 17 minutes This is your highest-value Section C question. Never sacrifice it for Q12c or Q12d. If you run over on Q12c: the time cost comes from Q12d, not Q12e. Q12e is sacrosanct.

Q13/Q14 Essay — 25 minutes minimum Include: 2 minutes question selection, 2 minutes planning, 20 minutes writing, 1 minute conditional judgement check.

#EMERGENCY TRIAGE PROTOCOLS

When you are behind, these are the decisions — in order.

5 minutes behind entering Section D:

• Reduce each KAA chain to 3 sentences (not 5)
• Write each evaluation in 2 sentences (mechanism + condition)
• Write the full conditional judgement — all 5 elements
• Expected: ~14–15/20

10 minutes behind entering Section D:

• KAA Chain 1 only (4 sentences) — 4 minutes
• P2 evaluation (2 sentences) — 1 minute
• KAA Chain 2 (3 sentences) — 3 minutes
• Conditional judgement (all 5 elements) — 2 minutes
• Skip P4 evaluation entirely
• Expected: ~12–13/20

15 minutes behind entering Section D:

• Write the conditional judgement FIRST — 3 minutes
• Then write KAA Chain 1 with as many stages as time allows
• Expected with judgement + partial P1: ~10–12/20
• Expected without judgement (body only): ~7–9/20
• The judgement first is always right when time is critical

The non-negotiable: The conditional judgement is always written, even if the body is incomplete. An unconditional essay with a complete body scores maximum ~14/20. A thin essay with a complete conditional judgement scores ~12–14/20. The judgement is never sacrificed.

#MARKS PER MINUTE — KNOW WHERE YOUR TIME IS MOST VALUABLE

Every minute on the paper earns approximately 0.76 marks on average. But the return varies by where you are:

Highest return per additional minute:

• Q12e (14 marks, 17 min) — starting when behind
• Q13/14 (20 marks, 25 min) — starting when behind
• Adding the conditional judgement (~2 marks, 20 seconds) — best return per second on the paper

Lowest return per additional minute:

• Over-developing Q12a (already at 2/2, writing more)
• Writing a third chain on Q12c/d (zero additional marks)
• Writing evaluation on the 6-mark (zero marks)
• Over-developing any Section B question beyond full marks
