#WHAT THIS IS

Most students know which level they are aiming for. Almost no student knows the exact minimum sentence that crosses each threshold. This guide maps the precise gear change — the specific content addition that moves from one level to the next — for every extended question type on WEC12.

These are not aspirational targets. They are the minimum viable additions to move from Level N to Level N+1. Nothing more is required to cross the threshold. Nothing less will do it.

#THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE

Every level boundary on WEC12 is defined by one specific addition. Not a longer answer. Not more points. One specific addition that the lower level lacks and the higher level requires.

#6-MARK ANALYSE — POINTS-BASED

There are no "levels" — each mark is discrete. The threshold is the mark-boundary.

The single sentence that earns An1: "...meaning [country] faces [real GDP falls / unemployment rises / inflation decelerates / current account worsens] as [mechanism]."

The cost of not writing it: −1 mark per chain. On a 6-marker, that's the difference between 4/6 and 6/6.

#8-MARK EXAMINE — POINTS-BASED

The single sentence that earns Ev2: "This mechanism holds only if [specific named condition from extract context]."

The cost of not writing it: −1 AO4 mark. Every time. Without exception.

#14-MARK DISCUSS — LEVELS-BASED (KAA 8mk + Eval 6mk)

#KAA THRESHOLDS

The single sentence that crosses L2→L3 KAA: Stage 4 completion on BOTH chains. "...meaning [country] faces [named macro outcome]" on each chain.

The single sentence that crosses L3→L3-top (8/8): Same as above but with own-country data fully integrated and multi-stage chains showing no omitted stages.

#EVALUATION THRESHOLDS

The single sentence that crosses L2→L3 eval: "This conclusion holds only if [specific extract-anchored condition]. If [counter-condition], then [alternative argument prevails because mechanism]."

The cost of missing it: Maximum 4/6 on the evaluation band. Maximum ~12/14 total. Every series.

#20-MARK EVALUATE — LEVELS-BASED (KAA 12mk + Eval 8mk)

#KAA THRESHOLDS

Level	Mark range	The one addition to next level
Level 1	1–3	Add any 3-stage chain with a signal word.
Level 2	4–6	Add Stage 4 (named macro outcome) to the main chain + embed extract/own-country data mid-chain.
Level 3	7–9	Stage 4 on BOTH chains. Both chains with embedded data. Bilateral structure (both sides present).
Level 4	10–12	Both chains fully developed (Stage 4, no stages omitted). Own-country data (specific figure + year). BOTH chains at this standard simultaneously — one strong + one weak = Level 3, not Level 4.

The exact minimum for Level 4 KAA:

Both chains: Stage 1 → Stage 2 (data embedded) → Stage 3 → Stage 4 (named macro outcome)
Own-country data: specific country + specific figure + specific year, embedded in ONE chain
Both chains use different mechanisms and different data
No stages omitted on either chain

The single most common reason students sit at Level 3 not Level 4: One chain is strong (Stage 4, data embedded); the other chain is weak (Stage 3 only, no data). BOTH must be at Level 4 standard simultaneously.

#EVALUATION THRESHOLDS

The exact minimum for Level 3 top eval (7–8/8):

P2: Type 1 evaluation of KAA1
  → Mechanism of limitation (Ev1) ✓
  → "Only if [condition]" (Ev2) ✓

P4: Type 1 evaluation of KAA2  
  → Mechanism of limitation (different from P2) (Ev1) ✓
  → "Only if [condition]" (Ev2) ✓

Conclusion:
  → Decision (using question's exact terms) ✓
  → Justification (new reasoning not in body) ✓
  → Extract anchor ✓
  → "Only if [condition]" ✓
  → Counter-condition + new addition ✓

The single most common reason students sit at Level 2 eval not Level 3: The conclusion is unconditional. One sentence — "This holds only if [condition]" — is the difference. It takes 20 seconds to write. It is worth 1–2 eval marks. This is the highest marks-per-second action on the paper.

The pattern: Every gear change from Level 2 to Level 3 on KAA requires the same addition — Stage 4 completion with embedded data. Every gear change from Level 2 to Level 3 on evaluation requires the same addition — the "only if" condition sentence.

Two additions. Used at every level on every question type. Master these two and every other technique is secondary.

#ONE-SENTENCE FIXES — PRINT THESE

These are the exact minimum sentences to add to cross each threshold.

For KAA Level 2→3 (Stage 4 completion): "...meaning [country]'s real GDP [falls below/rises above] its [trend rate/full employment level], [unemployment rises as firms cut hiring / inflation decelerates / current account deficit widens] as [mechanism]."

For KAA Level 3 own-country data (to reach Level 4): "In [country], where [variable] was [figure] in [year] — [specific implication embedded in the causal argument, not stated separately]..."

For Eval Level 2→3 (condition sentence): "This conclusion holds only if [specific named condition tied to extract context]. If [counter-condition applies], then [alternative argument prevails because mechanism]."

For the unconditional conclusion fix (20 seconds, 1–2 marks): "...only if [condition]. However, if [alternative], then [other argument] because [mechanism]."

#PART 5: GEAR CHANGES IN PRACTICE — BEFORE AND AFTER

One concrete example per question type showing the exact sentence that crosses each threshold.

#6-MARK: L2 → L3 GEAR CHANGE

BEFORE (L2 — Stage 3 stop): "Egypt's base rate rose from 21.25% to 27.25%. This increased borrowing costs, reducing consumer spending and shifting AD leftward."

Why L2: Stage 3 endpoint. "Shifting AD leftward" = the cause, not the macro outcome.

THE ONE SENTENCE THAT CROSSES TO L3: Add: "...shifting AD leftward from AD₁ to AD₂, reducing Egypt's real output below its full employment level (Yfe) and generating downward pressure on demand-pull inflationary pressure as the positive output gap compressed."

Time cost: 20 seconds. Mark gain: L2 → L3 = +2 marks on 6-marker.

#8-MARK: L2 → L3 EVAL GEAR CHANGE

BEFORE (L2 eval — condition named, no "only if"): "However, higher interest rates may not work if inflation is cost-push."

Why L2 eval: Rung 2. Condition named (cost-push) but no mechanism and no "only if."

THE ONE SENTENCE THAT CROSSES TO L3 EVAL: Replace with: "However, this borrowing-cost channel holds only if Egypt's inflation is predominantly demand-pull — if the 35% pound depreciation in 2023 represents the primary driver (cost-push), rate rises compress demand without addressing the SRAS origin, risking stagflation rather than disinflation."

Time cost: 30 seconds. Mark gain: L2 → L3 eval = +1-2 marks on 8-marker.

#14-MARK: L3 → L3-TOP KAA GEAR CHANGE

BEFORE (L3 entry — one chain strong, second chain weaker): "South Korea's 2.25pp rate rise → borrowing costs → C falls → AD left → CPI eases. [Strong. Stage 4.] Won appreciation → export competitiveness falls → net exports worsen. [Stage 3 only.]"

Why L3 not L3-top: Second chain stops at Stage 3 — no named macro outcome.

THE ONE SENTENCE THAT CROSSES TO L3-TOP: Add to Chain 2: "...worsening net exports (X−M) as a component of AD, deteriorating South Korea's current account balance and reducing the external sector's contribution to GDP growth — a cost that the disinflation benefit must be weighed against."

Time cost: 20 seconds. Mark gain: L3 mid → L3 top = +1 KAA mark.

#20-MARK: L3 → L4 KAA GEAR CHANGE (the hardest transition)

BEFORE (L3 — both chains present, both at Stage 4, but P2 absent): "[P1: borrowing cost chain, Stage 4 ✓, data embedded ✓] [P3: exchange rate chain, Stage 4 ✓, data embedded ✓] [Evaluation at end — after both chains]"

Why L3 not L4: Bilateral structure but not bilateral DEVELOPMENT. P2 (evaluate P1 before P3) is absent.

THE PARAGRAPH THAT CROSSES TO L4: Insert between P1 and P3: "However, this borrowing-cost channel's effectiveness depends on whether UK inflation was predominantly demand-pull. The Russia-Ukraine energy shock shifted SRAS leftward simultaneously — meaning a significant cost-push component may mean rate rises address only the demand element while the price level persists via the supply-side origin. This mechanism controls inflation only if demand-pull forces constitute the majority of the 11.1% CPI peak."

Time cost: 2-3 minutes to write. Mark gain: L3 → L4 KAA = +2-3 KAA marks.

#20-MARK: L2 → L3 EVAL GEAR CHANGE (the most expensive single fix)

BEFORE (L2 eval — unconditional conclusion): "Overall, monetary policy is the most effective means of controlling inflation."

Why L2 eval: Unconditional = Level 2 eval cap. One sentence caps the entire eval band at 6/8 maximum.

THE ONE SENTENCE THAT CROSSES TO L3 EVAL: Add: "This conclusion holds only if UK inflation was substantially demand-pull in composition — which the post-Covid wage growth above 6% and positive output gap in 2021-2022 confirm was the case for the UK episode."

Time cost: 20 seconds. Mark gain: L2 eval cap removed → L3 eval accessible = +2 eval marks minimum.
