Squat pattern
Back squat, hack squat, front squat, leg press.

What the pattern is responsible for
Knee and hip extension against a load carried through the trunk (bar) or the feet (press). Trains all three vasti heavily; trains rectus femoris comparatively poorly regardless of which variation you pick — see the quadriceps anatomy lesson for why.
Tier 1 — Equivalent
Hack squat ↔ Leg press ↔ Back squat, for hypertrophy purposes specifically. All three load the quads through a genuinely similar length range and resistance curve. The differences between them are in stability demand and spinal loading, not in the fundamental quad stimulus.
If your goal is pure hypertrophy and your gym has a hack squat or leg press, you lose essentially nothing by using it instead of a back squat — and you gain the ability to safely take the set to true failure, which a loaded barbell on your back should not be taken to.
Tier 2 — Close, with a stated cost
Front squat. Shifts more of the load anteriorly, which some lifters find allows more comfortable depth, but demands considerably more thoracic and wrist mobility. Quad stimulus is similar; the cost is technical difficulty, not muscle targeting.
Bulgarian split squat / walking lunge. Genuinely trains the same muscles through a similar length range, unilaterally. The cost: balance and coordination demand means the limiting factor is often stability rather than the target muscle, which can cap how much load you actually apply to the quads specifically.
Tier 3 — Last resort
Goblet squat. Real quad stimulus at lighter loads, useful for home-gym setups without a rack. The load ceiling is low — a dumbbell-limited goblet squat will stop progressing quads well before a barbell or machine movement would.
If it's your knees, specifically
Depth is usually not the problem — ankle or hip mobility limiting how you get into depth usually is. Do not simply cut range of motion to add weight; that trades the actual stimulus for a bigger number. Try a leg press with feet positioned lower on the platform (reduces knee flexion demand) before abandoning the pattern; if pain persists past a week, see a physio rather than guessing further.
